As the search engine is down, please don't flame me if this has been covered! (went 5 pages back JUST in case).

As the title says, did anyone watch this C4 documentary that was on the past few Sundays and has just finished?

I went into it expecting to cringe at the UK kids and howl at the devotion of the Amish, but I was pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, although the show wasn't that biased, picking some fairly middle class kids for them to stay with did sway it slightly.

The Amish I felt came across very well. I'm not religious, but I do respect other peoples beliefs and felt that these were a very caring, well balanced young set of people even with the lifestyles they lead (more for the balanced aspect here). The way they had a go at most activities, but still held their own values and only went so far, was a great show of restraint and is admirable. However, it is good to see that men from any background are still easily led to beer!

Confidence to integrate the way they did, but still express their love of god openly, was refreshing. Good documentary overall I felt.

your family clearly didn't need to resort to that tactic to breed a moron.

Ahem, I believe that it is reasonably well known that the Amish have a history of inbreeding and as a result have had some genetic defect problems.

I'd find a link but frankly I can't be arsed, try typing it into google and see what comes back!

My girlfriend and I decided that it would be quite nice to be Amish, if it wasn't for the inbreeding and religion.

I loved the guy who had been on rumspringa for 7 years.

They do all look a little similar! It would be interesting to look at the DNA profiles of those groups.

Fascinating programme overall, I really admire the fact that they gave most things a try even though it was very uncomfortable.

What goes clip...clop....clip....clop. BANG BANG. Clippity clop...Clippity clop?

An Amish ride-by shooting!

I enjoyed this series but didnt think it was that balanced to be honest. Seemed to me like the families were told not to question the Amish too much. Whereas the Amish could question our vaules/way of life as they saw fit.

Questions I would have asked:

1. Dont you ever question what you are being taught about religion/whats in the bible?

2. Why do you only cherry pick passages from the bible by which to live by? (there are alot of passages talking about killing people, beating children, slavery).

Thought it was funny when the brother and sister were talking about the procession and said about the Minotaur being "just a story". I thought yeah thats not the only thing thats just a story!!

I watched all of the episodes and came away thinking what a nice bunch of people the Amish are. Very tolerant, calm and dignified. Not only are they nice people but hey seem to live the perfect life too, no worries, no stress, no greed..etc..etc.

I thought that lad with the glasses and the 'strawberry blonde' could have easily led a life or endless parties and boozing, very funny.
