hello! I have a 1993 850 GLT 2.0 and on the way back from camping with the wife and kids last week the car started to run a bit hot. So i pulled over and there was no coolant in the expansion tank! So we waited around till it cooled down and I topped it up and carried on. 10 miles later the same happened again but I was on the M1 so I couldn't stop. The temp gauge was just over half so I didn't worry too much. then about a mile later there was a knocking sound coming from the engine on acceleration (HEAD GASKET?). so I then pulled over and the oil was very hot and smoking. had the car towed home and now wont even turn over. I wondered whether i had warped the head or something but i find this hard to believe as these cars are so tough. I had a little fiat when i was 17 and drove that for weeks with a blown head gasket. ANY IDEAS?

I think the answer is in the question here.

The temperature sensor measures the temperature of the water! If there is no water in there then the reading from the sensor is meaningless!!!

Oil thins as it gets hotter. If it gets too thin it doesn't lubricate anymore, hence the knocking.

Sounds like you've cooked it up and shagged the bottom end - scrap it if it's buggered and buy another, they're that cheap - not worth fixing - even if its just the HG - will be expensive to sort unless you can fix it yourself.
