Seiko Quartz Astron commemorative edition - re-issue of the 1969 original, the first quartz watch.

Quite like this bit: 'The date change happens instantaneously. In fact, it takes just 1/ 2,000 of a second, far faster than in any normal watch.'

Does it have the Grand Seiko movement? I have seen them in action. The second hand glides round with no jolts. It's superior to any mechanical movement, I understand.

As for the date, my Tissot does instant date although probably not so good. At midnight, the day and date flick round. It's quite strange!

Edit: ah, yes, apparently it's the same movement.

The 1/2000th of a second date change is imperceptible to the human eye apparently.

Isn't 1/50 imperceptible? In any case, I will admit that my Tissot isn't quite in that level of "instant". hehe

Sorry of jumping in here, but whats the story with Grand Seiko?

I'm on an extended business trip in Yokohama at the moment and most of the Seiko's I've seen for sale are of the Grand Seiko variety, sold alongside Rolex and Omega's.......and they cost mega bucks.

Personally I'm looking to add a new 200m automatic divers watch to my collection (preferably yellow dial) but have had no luck and the prics of what I have seen are way north of anything I've paid in the UK/Dubai before. Anyone out there got experiences of buying in this area of Japan and can give me a heads up where to look?

Japan can be expensive !!!

Good forums are worth a look. A GS or Credo is all about quality rather than marketing. To some it will always just be a seiko !!

The best model if you could find it would be this :: http://elitechoice.org/tag/baselworld-2008/ serious bit of kit. Expect it to be "copied" soon though !!

The second hand aligns perfectly to the markers, thanks to a special jumper that incorporates a hairspring.
Am I missing something? Doesn't perfect alignment imply it 'jumps' to each second or am I just demonstrating my ignorance?

Its a whole new world. Rolex are nothing mechanically when compared to the might of Seiko. Have you seen how accurate they are !!!! some are down to +-3 seconds a bloody year !!

I think this is a 'normal' quartz - as in 'one tick/beat per second', rather than a Spring Drive which has a (supposedly) true sweeping second hand.

NFI. I'm confused, now.

The new Quartz Astron looks like a mechanical watch.

At first glance, any watch expert would think that the new Quartz Astron is a mechanical watch as the hands are larger and therefore heavier than on any conventional quartz watch. In fact, the use of larger hands is made possible by the use of a unique IC that delivers two pulses per second, rather than the one on most of the quartz movements.
