Current Saab is now running a lot better after I've spent the past few months wringing its neck every trip (previous owner drove it on short trips in the city and clogged it up), along with an unplanned race on a....private... dual carriageway with a range rover sport...he chickened out at 115, I passed him doing north of 125....car has sounded a lot healthier after that....think the sustained high revs has burned whatever crap was left that the physical cleaning couldn't get too....
It's amazing what a good blast will do... years ago my old man bought an XR3i cabriolet from a lady who had driven it a mile and a half to the station and back every day. On the way home we had a blast over Newlands Corner (back when there was a dual carriageway at the bottom) only to be greeted by an enormous cloud of smoke pouring out of the back of the car. A couple of miles later it had all gone, and ran much better as well hehe

Generic people at work: OMG, my car is so old. I really need a new one.
Me: Oh really? How old is it?
GPAW: It's <typically 3-5> years old.
Me: *nods* Mine is 24 years old.

I think people have confused their wants and their needs.
You speak my words exactly!

"My car is 5 years old! I NEED a new one! My current car is too expensive!"

My car is 18 Years old , why do you need a new one!

So they then proceed to sign up to a Finance deal for a £12000 1.2 litre Boring Tin Box.

I have two cars , and have run them for two years for a lot less than they are paying just for the car!

But for many, that's all they want and all they need, so not THAT stupid in the context.

I agree, that's what they were invented for. 'We' have appropriated them for more than transport.

They probably see us as nutters

Think I may have been a little misunderstood! It's more the fact that when people say that "A to B" phrase you just know that they don't give a toss about getting from A to B in comfort or excitement or enjoyment etc etc. Just strikes me as a bit boring. All to their own though. Mind you people that go from C to D.That's another whole debate.......

I know some folk who are excellent competitive, off-piste skiers, who are far from boring, but just aren't interested in cars. Their sole criteria is that it can get them from the house (A) to the mountains (B) and carry their stuff. Beyond that, they have no interest in shape, size, brand or any other aspect of the vehicle. Some of the vehicle choices I've seen couldn't even be called comfortable for long trips, but that's just not important. As long as they get there they are happy

I think the misunderstanding is between you and the purpose of this thread. It's more where people say things feigning knowledge or assuming they are correct when it's completely wrong rather than simply saying "I don't know". Not just demonstrating they don't have an interest in cars.

Not so much a 'what they said' but a 'what they did' - found this on Facebook....

Prestige Motor Services - "We recently had an Audi TT 3.2 V6 because of an engine issue...The guys opened it up and this is what we found. This is the worst engine we have ever seen. Judging by the service manual it looks to have been 83,296 miles since the last service."

A testament to Audi engineering that the thing was running at all !
I remember a similar post about a BMW engine in the US. Someones mate asked them to come over as the engine light was on, he asked when they last had it serviced "eh what's that then". No oil change for something in the region of 100,000 miles. It's amazing they cope that far.
I used to work with a couple of lease companies. This is the norm. I've heard of people losing their jobs following companies receiving huge repair bills after drivers not servicing their leased cars. They don't even have to pay for servicing! Sheer laziness.

Some of them didn't even understand why warranty claims were denied following cases like the above. And some genuinely thought an MOT and a service were one and the same. People are stupid.

That said I was quite surprised how robust some cars were after years of neglect. Some with close to 100k on the clock with just a single oil change and seemingly okay....it happens, sadly.

This always seems crazy to me; the last you want to do if you're spending too much cash on a car is buy a new one!

I used to think a car was just a way of getting from point "A" to point "B"- and on weekends point "C". But that was the old me. That man died the moment I laid eyes on the 1979 Honda Accord.

You'll all scoff I'm sure, but there's a lot to be said for an A-to-B car. Motoring's a lot simpler that way. No tax, no insurance, and the warm glow as it burns itself away in some poor bd's field.
