I'm using a Sparco race helmet with either a clear or Iridium type visor. All is well until the inside of the visor gets wet, at which point the inside of the visor becomes distorted/rippled where the drops of water have landed. It can get to the point where the visor is unusable/dangerous.

If I dry the visor off and keep it in a dry place after an hour or so it becomes ok again.

i'm guessing there is some kind of anti-fog coating on the inside of the visor, which absorbs water and swells up causing the ripples/distortion (??).

Is there any way to prevent this? Are all race helmet visors like this?

(I'm racing an open cockpit car so when very wet, some water does sometimes get onto the inside of the visor, if only in the padock whilst the helmet is being moved around).

Hi,

I use Holts anti fog visor stuff (Halfords), and it was excellent in a wet race at Brands.

i use this stuff, does the job well. in emergency cases a very thin layer of fairy liquid on the inside of the visor does the trick too.

Thanks for the replies chaps, but I think you've misunderstood my question. I'm not asking how to prevent misting/fogging on the inside of the visor, but asking why my visor's inside surface ripples up when wet (if you apply a drop of water to the inside surface of the visor and leave for a minute, if you then try and wipe the drop of water away, it leaves a big mark as though the surface of the visor has absorbed the water and swollen. After an hour in the dry, this swelling/rippling disapears).

Any ideas?

Hi, there isn't a protective film still on the visor is there. I know it sounds silly but I can't think of anything else.

Hi, Thanks for feedback. No, there is no protective film there, I double checked as that was my first thought too. Thanks.
