Are ice cream vans run by the mafia and other urban myths?
Discussion
When I was growing up and into my twenties, it was a "Well known fact" that all ice cream rounds were run by a local mafia type organisation and if you pitched up as a rival on their patch you would not last long, same applied for window cleaning apparently. can any one shed any light on this info, god knows why I am interested, must be bored on bank hols.

recently we saw a couple of guys cleaning the shop fronts of a few businesses across the street so i went to them and asked if they could clean ours too.
they said they would do it as a one off but were adamant that if the previous cleaner came that we would have to tell them and they wouldnt clean ours then.
despite assuring him several times that its been a few years since the last guy came he was insistant on this.
i just started to think since when did we sign a contract to the previous guy saying he "owned" the rights to our shop windows being cleaned? we agreed for him to do it - not to have a lifetime rights ownership!

The film, " Comfort and Joy" is about the ice cream wars and is side-splittingly funny.

I dont think our local mobile Ice-man is part of the mafia... I think he would rather have been in the Forth Reich.
- I've mentioned it a few times on here, but it always made me laugh: Back in the day when Michael Schumacher was in his prime, if he won on a Sunday the Icecream man would often slip a couple of verses of the German National Anthem on his jingles.
...I'm sure it made a few of the old boy's eye brows lift!

flyposters protect their business with violence too!
iirc there was also a chap in Manchester who was shot and killed by a rival flyposter gang.
The ice cream van outside our school in the old days did a nice side line in single fags. If you actually wanted an ice cream from it you had to make sure and ask for ice cream and not just a single lease or you would be given a fag.
It ran out of fags one day and almost got rolled over by the smokers. The guy managed to get in to the drivers seat and drive off whilst being rocked from side to side. It didnt come back after that
