I has just returned from a trip to wales and because of the remote location i had to use one of those mini cashpoints that charge.
Basically i tried to withdraw £30 but it failed so i withdrew £20.

Now i have checked my bank statement and have 2 transactions for £31.99 and £21.99. The £1.99 is the charge, but the first transaction has gone through even though it showed as failed on the screen and gave no money.
Whats the best thing to do?
Ring the pub the cashpoint was in?

Bank or cashpoint provider, pub will have nothing to do with the machine.

I thought so, best to ring the pub for the owners details?

They will only tell/give you the contact of the company that owns the machine as it has nothing to do with the pub. You will have to photo copy you bank stetement and send it to them then wait approx 3 months.

It seems strange that when i went to use it, the barman plugged something in the back and it printed a recept out the back.

hmm, very strange, a cash report perhaps to say it only had £20???

Still Bank or cash machine operator, you may be able to get these details from the pub....

have you made any purchases without you knowing yet?? it is possible to have said card cloned.
i use to work in an off license and we had a machine that i topped up myself out of the till everyday but if someone could not get cash out or said they had not been paid we just gave them the contact of the company that installed the machine. we only got 65p out of the 165p charged.

I have phoned the pub and contacted the company who runs it. basically i have to contact my bank and open an ATM dispute and the company will investigate.

Only the £31.99 missing and all other transactions are accounted for.

The cash machine will have records of transactions and the amount of money inside it, after you raise an ATM dispute you'll get it back no problem if the numbers add up.

good luck...

I withdrew £250 from a cash machine at a new Tesco store, at 10:00 on the morning the store opened. the machine printed a receipt but didn't dispense the cash. It was a Nat West machine (if i remember right....) but my bank is Smile.

It took me 3 months to recover the cash. At first they said it could not be proved either way and basically tough... I had to write to EVERY director at their home address (Costs £1 to get the info from Companies House)before i got anywhere.

In the end they refunded, but i spent soooo much time sorting it.

double check your statement because those machines, even if its declined or cancelled, will always show a withdrawal then an imediate refund as two transactions

In a pub? Are you sure it was a cashpoint and not a fruit machine?

Who knows for the OP but i seemed to have found a fruite which thought it was a cash machine whenever i played it over the last few months. Very nice. Sadly the pub has just been closed as it was bought out by JD Withatts so not expecting to being going in there again in this lifetime frown

Your bank should resolve this quite easily as they'll find a discrepancy between the physical cash balance and the calculated balance.

A good few years ago it was said that you could trick the machine. Say if you tried to withdraw say £100, you could trick the machine by plucking out the 3 £20 notes in the middle but leave the 2 outer £20 notes in the holder. The machine would then recoup the uncollected cash and would supposedly treat this as a zero withdrawl, leaving you £60 richer in this case.

It was a myth that left a number of my mates £40 worse off as their statement would show a £100 withdrawl, which they then had to dispute with the bank.

It should not take them to long to check on the accounting as the cash in most places are protected by paint and other devices cash trays are never opened by the security companies(securicor/brinks) that top it up if that is the case with this one you should be reimbersed. But if it is like ours was then it would be down to the pub to reimberse you.
You will have to chase them for to get the money back though.
