I have had my 1992 500SL now for about 4 months now, long enough to know that it is going to be a long and enjoyable relationship. I would like to share my enthusiasm and would like to join a Mercedes club, but which one? I live in the far South West and would be very interested to hear comments from you experienced Mercedes fans.

The Mercedes-Benz Club is the oldest Mercedes club in the world. It is the only British club recognised by the manufacturer. For £30 a year or thereabouts, you get membership, a first rate monthly glossy magazine a free subscription to the quarterly magazine Merecedes-Benz Classic (which is utterly brilliant, published by Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, probably the best quality motoring publication anywhere), the usual discounts everywhere and there are plenty of events (like an annual SL day). Best of all, you get free access to the Mercedes-Benz electronic parts catalogue and workshop information system. These are invaluable when it comes to ordering parts for your car and troubleshooting problems.

By all means look at joint he others, too, but I assure you, this club really is worth it. There is a healthy forum, too, along with on-line technical articles. For 30 quid a year it is a total bargain.

Have to agree with R129SL, I joined the Mercedes-Benz Club and have been thoroughly impressed by the magazine and the EPC and WIS access. Definitely £30 well spent. Join now!

The Mercedes-Benz electronic parts catalogue and workshop information system are accessed not from the Club site but rather from Mercedes-Benz's own site. You will need your club membership card which itself is issued by Mercedes-Benz (unless you already have your membership number from the online registration process--it will be "ENGnnnnn" where "n" are numbers). Then go to www.mercedes-benz-clubs.com, go to the Club Lounge, register and commence. I believe (from memory, I am at a different computer and do not have the club password to hand) that there are detailed instructions on the Club's website. The EPC and WIS operate in Java. It is quite excellent software. With your chassis number, you can obtain very detailed information about your car. Obviously, you will have to persevere with it at first because it is pretty sophisticated. It is worth an hour of your time to learn how it works. The only irritation is having to set the language to English every time you use it.

I have nothing to do with the club other than being a member. It has a very diverse membership and is, perhaps, a bit more fuddy-duddy than Pistonheads. However, its membership is very friendly, very knowledgeable and a great many members put a great deal of effort into organising Mercedes-related activities. If ou do nothing at all, the Gazette and Mercedes-Benz Classic magazines are worth the subscription alone and the EPC/WIS software is the icing on the cake.

Just one comment on the membership card. My card did not have the "ENGnnnn" number on it. I contacted the membership secretary (her name is in the membership pack) and she told me that M-B have some computer problems, so the memberships cards at the moment are only temporary ones without themembership numbers . She also let me know her login details for EPC/WIS, so if you are in the same situation as me drop her a note and I'm sure she will give you the details.

Thanks. I'm glad you like your car: it looked like a corker in the Pistonheads ad. I love these cars. They were the latest thing when I was a schoolboy so I suppose it is inevitable that I would have to have one. I love the build quality and the really low key but beautiful styling. I've done just a few miles short of 200,000 miles in mine, mostly too fast, and it has never, ever let me down.
