The latter I can understand, but the former? Are you from Norfolk or something? People have died from eating that.

The Lapps feed these fungi to reindeer and then drink their urine. Apparently the process of passing through another animal takes the edge off the hallucinogens.

Niiiice.

Does anyone know of any groups or organizations that do courses or "taster" days on mushroom collecting, my FIL is interested in going mushroom collecting, or at least learning about which ones to really avoid.

There's a lot of bad info on the Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria), if prepared properly they are perfectly safe. Not to be just picked and eaten like you can with the Liberty Cap (Psilocybe Semilanceata), although even those are best prepared properly.
There have been reported deaths from eating the Fly Agaric, but i believe those are few and far between, and usually when many have been eaten by accident. It's close relatives Amanita virosa (Destroying Angel) and Amanita phalloides (Death Cap) are the real nasty ones.
Not from Norfolk, just had a misplaced youth.... Sometimes play with the idea of experimenting again, but most likely never will.
I will say, anyone thinking of playing with 'magic' mushrooms of any sort, be very careful..... Fun can be had, but it can turn into a nightmare if you are not in the right surroundings and with the right people.
I just posted the pics for fun smile

It's ironic that of those two the hallucinogenic mushroom with the least dangerous side effects is a class A drug and the other is unclassified!

I was out looking for puffball mushrooms but didn't find any.
Instead I came across a load of these.

I have a vague recollection that MC told me white gills were bad...so I didn't pick them as I thought they might be the death cap.

I also found plenty of these, which I thought might be edible, but didn't risk it.

Any ideas what they are?

My guess is the genus 'Collybia' for the first and 'Clitocybe' for the second - do the gills run down the stem? Collybias are bitter and tough, though won't kill you. Some Clitocybes are edible, but there are a few which are deadly poisonous - I leave the entire genus alone.

Thanks MC smile thought you'd know them. Unless I know for definate what wild mushrooms are, I wouldn't pick/eat them. I would like to know more about identifying them - seems the best way is to take pics and post them on here biggrin

I'd get a book. This is the one to get:

It's long out of print but second-hand copies do pop up on amazon from time to time.

What sets it apart from the others is the visual index to the main families on pages 10-12. Some families are almost all edible, others none - once you know these you've got it nailed.

Nice!

Never found them in Surrey frown

There are a few measly puffballs on the lawn but that's it.

Whereabouts do you go 'shrooming in Surrey? About the only place I've had any really great success is Puttenham Common, but I'd love to find somewhere closer to Epsom.

Bump smile

Just been out today and collected a load of Wood Blewit and a couple of Agaricus Macrosporus. Fried them up in garlic butter, added onions and a bit of milk and some pecorino (absolute bargain in Costco) and mixed it with pasta.

Was lovely and creamy and the mushrooms were all yummy.

Also found masses of nice looking Clouded agaric which I'll probably go back and pick and try some, heard from reliable sources that very few people react to them.

Ps. I was told today, by a chap who certainly knows his stuff, that you can take a nibble (and taste on your tongue) of any mushroom at all so long as you spit it out afterwards. People only suffer and get ill from ingestion, not minute quantities in the mouth smile

I'll give it a shot if I ever see one smile

On a related note a friend of mine took home a couple of fly agaric to eat today as well. Said he hasn;t had them before but seemed willing to give it a shot!

Quite! I've heard this too, and also that these taste pleasant. I'd rather not try it though...

I've found a few Agaricus campestris and arvensis in recent weeks, also quite a few Lepista nuda (too late so they'd gone soggy).

I'm hoping that a few warmish dry days might confuse some 'shrooms into sprouting again - all in it's been a disappointing year frown
