Elgin Pocket Watch - any information?
Discussion
My old Granddad (whose 92) has just given me his Elgin Pocket Watch. He said that it was given to him by his Father. We're from very working class stock, so I don't suppose it has any monetry value, however it must be quite old and obviously has sentimental value so I'm trying to find out some more information about it.
I've done a Google and have found come generic Elgin information, but can anyone shed any light on its age or any point me in the direction where I can get some other information?
Also, where would I get a watch like this serviced / cleaned up?

Wow, I had no idea there was still a database for Elgin stuff! For more specific Elgin stuff, I'd maybe ask on this forum:
http://mb.nawcc.org/forumdisplay.php?f=11
Though a shot of the watch movement will probably be of more use to them, especially for things like dating it. Does the case have any hallmarks, or stamps? It's possible that, though the movement is American, the watch was cased up over here by a company like Dennison in Birmingham, which might add a litte more to the tale.
Edited to add- that Elgin site is awesome, thanks for posting it! It just saved me days of library digging. Do you know of any others for American/Swiss/English companies?

Click on the first link, then enter your serial nuber off the movement, not the case back model number, then you will get a stream of info as I did from an unknown watch off E-bay serial 17631737. Good Luck.
