I've been holidaying and working in St Johann for nearly 14 years on and off, and it's a great little village.

The skis chool is very good, and whilst not the challenging of resorts, it's great for beginners and intermediates...

The restaurants on the mountain are indeed very good. Try Hochfeld across from the top of the 2nd chair lift, excellent food. The restaurant at the top of the cable car is good also. The sunday ski show is worth watching at the bottom of the slope.
The bars in town are nice too, Max pub is good for Apres ski fun, but the cheesy Europop may drive you mad. Bunnyspub is good if you fancy a quality burger and more swanky club feel, and the restaurant Masianco is very good too... Baren in the square is probably the best food in the village centre, and upstairs bar is quite cool, plays classic rock and usually full of workers and locals...
Also, have a look in the church in the Square, it's fascinating.

I may be there in a week or 2 myself as I'm working in the area this sat for about 10 days..
st johann is beautiful, i havent been in skiing season but in the summers its absolutley lovely,

we used to get a cable car to the top of the different slopes and walk down via all the hotel bars a stunning place

I've worked there in summers at a few events like the Aussie Beerfest (now defunct), a wedding and a few Oktoberfest parties.. very lovely too !
I've only walked down from the middlestation on the cable car in summer once.. Took an hour and a half and my legs were killing me !!!

we have lots of memories from the summer there,

the octoberfest above the brewery in st johann, the toboggan, best of all was the cow parade in september when the cows are brought down from the upper fields all dressed in flowers, parade down the high street thats then closed, and the tables come out with the huberbrau and zipfer. great.

we used to get the cable car from harbiscl?? to theat lake, then walk round the lake and back down, or sometimes up the next one.

and just set off back and have a beer along the way.

Well, the weather here right now is absolutely perfect.

It snowed solidly for a couple of days last weekend, sadly raining from around 1000 - 1200m upwards, but loads of fresh snow at the top.

That's now been bashed, the cannons have been working their magic at the bottom, and conditions are absolutely perfect again.

It's been a strange season. Started fantastically well, lots of resorts opening a week or two early, January was OK, February a little less so, and March is just holding out. I would guess next week, with the high daytime temperatures at the moment, will be a disaster. I'm heading home at the weekend, just in time!

The seasonnaires are now all starting to head home, the fields are green, birds are singing, it's Spring time.

If anybody is heading out here for a late week, get up early for the first lift, ski until late lunch, eat, then head home early afternoon. The morning skiing on freshly pisted snow is brilliant, but it's pretty slushy by 2pm.

Just off for a walk in the sunshine to the sauna. smile

Yeah was gutted to go home on Saturday morning knowing how good the conditions would be after all that fresh snow!

Was definitely a mixed week last week. Did Resterhoehe on Sunday which was great until all the lifts closed at lunchtime due to very high winds. Everyone got funneled down to Pass Thurn, so had a long wait for a ski bus to Breitmoos for the Panoramabahn back down to Hollersbach. At least I didn't have to wait as long as those trying to head back to Kitzbuhel, the queue was massive!

Decided to ski the Kitzheinhorn glacier at Kaprun on Mon/Tues which was fab up top and very sunny, the views from the summit are stunning! Tried Resterhoehe again Wednesday as it was colder but the 3S Bahn was closed all day (not sure why) so couldn't get further across. Back to Kaprun Thurs/Fri and whilst Friday was not good visibility wise, the fresh powder was great smile

Really wanted to try the Rodelbahn at Wildkogel to see if it matched up to the Rodelbahn at Schladming (my favourite ever Rodelbahn), but sadly it was closed. Will have to go back mid-season next time I think smile

Ah, the Wildkogel one is very long, 14km "Longest In The World" which means the top is quite flat.... Gets good about 2/3 of the way down, by which time you're bored! We did it on the super-toboggans and it was pretty duff. Kirchberg and Going/Ellmau are far better (if shorter). Fastest we managed on Wildkogel was about 30km/h, compared to just shy of 60km/h on Gaisberg (Kirchberg). Soll is nice and long, but very bumpy, and normally full of drunken idiots, one to avoid.

I was out with Mrs Maser on Sunday, we spotted the high winds around 2pm, so headed back early. Parked at Fleck, so we could get home from pretty much anywhere on the mountain without having to get on a lift (it's handy knowing the place!). It was forecast, but vicious, none the less.

Glad you had some good days in Kaprun, I holidayed there for a fortnight in the early 90s, about four years before the tunnel fire, it's hardly changed a bit apart from the new Glescherbahn. Some investment needed really, although it's still pretty good.

If you're in to Rodelling, most of them close around mid-march, and conditions for 2-3 weeks prior to this aren't always great. Toboggans aren't built for slush! Head out early January (cheapest week of the season) for good snow, good rodelling, and quiet times. Just avoid Kitzbuehel on world cup week (third/fourth weekend in January), hotels are very expensive, although the atmosphere is stunning. 60'000 people partying in the town centre is awesome.

This week is great so far, but it's not going to last. Already the snow on the Horn is retreating higher up, by the weekend, it's really going to be the top runs only that are worth doing. 12 degrees in the sun today!

can anyone answer me this; do the Canadians have a laugh when they pick out of the hat what should be round (green), square (blue), diamond (red) and double diamond (black) or do they really consider the types of runs?

Just back from a week in Tinges. The weather was blue bird every day with temps just above freezing so the pistes were in good order. 50 of us went and we all returned with only one minor injury. Loads of videos were taken and general silliness ensued.

Having spent the last few years in North America and Canada where snow fall was never a problem it was nice to get back to Europe. If the snow had fallen the off piste opportunities would have been wonderful.

Next year I will return to Whistler but will keep an eye out for short trips to Europe for when the snow decides to dump.

By the way I used a GoPro HD camera this year with some really cool results. For a £300 video cam it outperformed my mate’s £1500 camera on the slopes especially when used on the end of an extendable pole. I will post up an example later

Brill, I was in Tignes the week before X-games, and it was fantastically clear for us too - cloud-free every day.

I didn't get round to telling you my adventure when I was in Whistler last January. The forecast said it would dump heavily on the Wednesday so I called Powder Mountain Snowcats on Tuesday night to book a place, and the conversation went like this

Me - "Hi, do you have any spaces left for tomorrow?"

Powder Mountain - "Sure!" pause "It'll be a - er - fast day tomorrow if that's ok?"

Me - "Why?"

PM - "Have you ever heard of Terje Haakonsen?"

Me - "No, sorry"

PM - "He was snowboard world champion in the 1990s. Several times"

Me - ". . . Oh."

PM - "And he's coming out to do some filming with a gang from GoPro Cameras"

Me - [voice an octave higher] "Erm well I've been skiing with Extremely Canadian the last few days"

PM - "Oh you'll be fine then!"

Needless to say I didn't get much sleep that night!

It was somewhat of a relief to find they were basically a bunch of mates getting together for a laugh and to try out some trick camera poles. I happily kept up with them all day, despite taking several routes that the guide said "We don't normally take people down here . . . " and doing their longest slope three times while it sloughed half a mile down the valley every time.

They have since posted up a video of the day's snowboard antics here. Sadly my only appearance was the tips of my skis in the opening shot!

I decided yesterday to head out to Whistler next week for a cheeky holiday before starting a new job . . . spring skiing here I come!

Whoozit, you "GIT!!!" Terje Haakonsen is a major hero of mine. He is the main man in the snowboarding world and he set the standard way before the likes of Shawn White came along.

As for the GoPro footage, my shots have a similar theme but without the powder and the skill biggrin That I'm afraid was missing in Tignes this year. frown They are great bits of kit and as you can see a pole produces wonderful results.

I have already booked to go back to Whistler for Xmas and New Year this year, will you be heading back?

PS How much was the cat skiing if you don’t mind me asking? I have heli boarded in Whistler but not tried the Cats

looked into the cat skiing yesterday - it's about 1/3 cheaper than the heliski

my last morning in Whistler and it's raining in the village, much like every evening this week which means it'll be dumping up top

I managed to get on the very first lift at Harmony yesterday as they only opened it at 11am due to high winds/whiteout at the top - GS is fking awesome in knee high powder!!

sad to be leaving but I've had a fantastic 10 days in the snow

We'll almost certainly be there. Given the early date of the first day of school next January we may well be there for both Xmas and New Year.

Cat skiing is ridiculously good value. $499 plus tax for as much or more vertical than you get in a heli. You lose the freedom factor obviously, but with good terrain and powder who needs it? If there's any decent weather while I'm there I'm going for it again.

Blimey, the winter feels like it was an age away already, even though I've only been back less than two weeks.

Roll on next year, making plans already. smile

St Anton last week was a great holiday, but disappointing skiing. Off-piste dangerous, pistes chopped to pieces and slushy (even at midstation) by midday. Getting up high early was just an ice-fest (although I liked that a lot, as I rented nice, heavy Atomic race carvers which I had the shop sharpen properly).

There was some OK skiing to be had out of the main resort (as it was far less busy) - heading over to Stuben early was a good call. Lech, with its South facing slopes, was a disaster.

Flipside was utterly beautiful weather. T shirts in town in the afternoon, fantastic spa trips, blue skies, and the mountains starting to go green. If it had been my only ski trip, I would have been disappointed - but as I have had a few this year, it was a fitting end to the season.

The most interesting day was our last Saturday, as the locals turned up. I saw some excellent skiing, but also some far more reckless and downright rude behaviour than from the tourists - plenty of cutting people up, skiing too close, and generally behaving like a c0ck. There was a fairly bad smash when some moron decided to "show up a tourist", misjudged it and, depite being an expert skier, ploughed straight into someone. Bell-end.

Roll on California/Nevada in December!

I was in Lech at the weekend. It was fine early on high up, no ice but not slushy. All turned to mush by noon but slush is actually quite fun on a board. Did a bit in Zech where the conditions held for longer. It was actually quite strange in Lech on a board as there was only a handful of us-it was like going back in time 20 years. Also plently of the older skiers were wearing 30 year old fluorescent fag-bags which just added to the charm.

As you say the weather was fantastic-it was like a skiing holiday but with tit-Monday thrown in.

We worked the conditions out early and hit it hard until lunch and then had a very long boozy lunch well into the evening. Lech is very small and friendly-might go back one day.

Great days!

Fantastic weeks skiing in Tignes and as I write this more snow is being tentatively forecast.Resort doesn't close til May sometime..

Plenty of good snow up top, glaciers in Tignes good and Val a highlight..

However the run I enjoyed most was the 'santons' blue from mid hill down to the outskirts of Val..normally it's quite a wide, long, steepish drop down between two

hills:because of lack of snow it was turned into a narrow (20 ft) halfpipe that tested your short turn technique for about 1/2 mile and left you with burning

quads before it spat you out into sunshine at the bottom. Was grinning like a fool for the rest of the day!

A rather strange time of year to resurrect this thread, but I'm being taken skiing in China (indoor, it's 36 degrees outside today) tomorrow, if it's not too busy.

So although it's not in the mountains, and is hardly going to be taxing, I'll be able to say I've skied in China (sort of fraudulently, yes....).

I'll try to get some pics if possible, I'll be honest and say I really don't know what to expect!

Knowing China quite well, it'll almost definitely be just like normal skiing in every single way, apart from one huge, and major misconception (lost in translation-esque). I can't even begin to think what that discrepancy might be, that's the beauty of this country!

Also going to a beer festival in the evening.

Quite strange to be here, where it's normally a massive culture shift, and to be going skiing and beer festivalling. Actually, it's more of a culture shock experiencing western culture in the east, when you're just not expecting it. High Tea at the Peninsula in Hong Kong is a similar experience.

Will keep you posted.
