hi
recently bought a 1972 vehicle. not been used on the road for 20yrs. but on the lobgook taxation class states: PLG, which means it has to be taxed like a post-72 vehicle.
it should say: historic vehicle

the car was defo registered/built in 1972.
if i apply for historic class will it defo be approved??

thanks

Once MOT'd & Insured you can apply to DVLA to have the taxation class changed to historic

Once classed as Historic it will remain in that class

If it's registered pre 72 you shouldn't have any problems - if it was registered after the cut off sometimes you need to jump thro a few hoops to prove it's build date

Probably daft question - does the date ever change?

Will be stupid when we get to 2020 and the date is still 1973 no?

When it was first introduced, the rule was "anything over 25 years old" could be registered as Historic, and the eligibility rolled forward for a few years.

Then (in 1998) the date was frozen as 1973. I don't see it changing any time soon.

Sorry to invade your thread a bit OP but I have a similar question. Is there a website or some place to call if i want to estimate how much tax I need to pay for a car? I am a foreigner to this country but I am a registered resident so registration isn't a problem, but before I bring another car here, I wanted to know if I can call up or visit a site to check out how much taxes I am gonna end up paying for the car. From reading this thread, I am guessing pre 1973 means paying more money in taxes and what I am trying to ship is a plymouth cuda 1970.

cuda will be road tax exempt = £0.00

but import duties would need to be paid, not sure but i think its like 10% of total car value..?

best to speak to DVLA

Thank you, I will look into it more. 10% isn't too bad, I thought it would be much more then that but I will have to wait until tomorrow and check with the DVLA then.

found this thread trying to find out why the date was original frozen at 1973
thought i would resurrect it to point out that people on the internet were wrong!

Resurecting a 4 year old thread to prove a point?
I dont see you posting in the thread above disagreeing with the 'internet'

Either way, I'm happy as my 1974 Dakar goes tax exempt in January.

No they weren't. At the time the thread was current, the 31st December 1972 was the last day of free tax and the extension only came later.

Simple. That was the cut-off point when the original rolling-25 was put on ice.

I bought a February 1973 Midget in 1997 in anticipation of free tax in 1998, but this was foiled by Gordon Brown and I have been waiting seventeen years for it to start rolling again!

Pulled the dust covers off, it started second time (last started in 2003) and went all the way to Goodwood, 400 mile round trip. Been really enjoying it this year.
