I suggest you watch the video full-screen, with the lights off and headphones on (they specifically ask you to do this to play the game too). I hardly have any time for games these days, but I had to give this a masochistic whirl for a little while.

Verdict? I simply cannot play it without having a heart attack. getmecoat

It was the same story with Resident Evil, Dead Space, Manhunt, Doom 3 etc. I just can't play them without yelping like a little puppy. And all the reviews say this game wallops them all in terms of sheer scare-factor, and is probably one of the most frightening and immersive games ever made.

Any other pussies here? How do you people who love these horror games play them? Do you go through some kind of psyche-yourself-up ritual or something?

I do wish this game worked for me. Just got it today, and it's crashing the moment I try to start it. All my drivers are up to date, there isn't anything conflicting with it, and it doesn't work with any of the various video configuration options I've tried.

A great shame, as I loved the Penumbra games. Going to try tomorrow evening on my Windows XP install and see if it'll work on that, but at the moment very disappointed in the design.

As for how to play them - you have to let the game scare you. Turn off all the lights, headphones on, make sure you've got no distractions at all, and then focus. React to the scary noises, panic when you hear something coming etc. The brilliance of these games comes from the fear, and once you finish playing you'll be able to sit back and realise how much more enjoyable the game was when you were letting it terrify you than when you tried to play it in a laid-back, carefree manner.

I found Siren: Blood Curse on the PS3 to be similar, playing with a small group of friends, switching player if we died - it was awesome fun as a game until my brother decided he didn't like the tension anymore and wanted to progress with the game quickly. He picked up the baseball bat and ran around with one of the characters, whose 'shout' (designed to distract the enemies so you can sneak past another way) was 'Yo!'. He then ran up to said enemy, and smacked them with the bat. Turns out the game's pretty easy when you try fighting instead of sneaking and running away. After that it was just boring.
