I signed up to a SIM only contract with Orange that includes data.

I recently bought an iPhone 4 and called to ask them to send me a micro SIM. They now tell me that I have to pay an extra £10/month for the privilage.

I asked several times before buying that I could get a micro SIM and was told each time all I needed to do was call and they would send one out free of charge. NO mention of the extra £10/month.

I now have an unlocked iPhone 4 from apple, an 18 month contract with Orange and a very angry expression on my face. They don't seem to want to budge.

Can I simply buy a tool online to trim my existing SIM down to micro SIM size and carry on as normal?

Just but a tool from ebay that cuts the card for you - i've done it and it's easy. The tool looks like a stapler.

OK. And it should all work fine after that? 3g data and everything?

yep - all works as expected. The microsim is just your normal simcard with all the extra plastic taken off it.

So Orange, like Porsche, want to charge me more for having less. A SIM GT-RS if you like. Gits. I'll stick with the standard model and just fold the back seats down.

Where did you get your tool from? There seem to be lots around and I don't want to waste my money and wreck my SIM.

Just a note of caution; I expect the extra tenner a month buys you a lot more data - usage may increase dramatically if you do not have regular access to wi-fi. Be careful you don't start getting charged £10/MB or something silly if you exceed your existing data allowance.

This is the one I bought - don't know how it compares to the others but it does the job ok.

ebay item

I only used it the once - do you have one of those phone shops close to you? They might do it for you

The tarrif includes 500mb (fair usage). I believe this is what most iPhone tarrifs also include.

Fair enough. £10 for an extra 250 MB does seem a bit steep:

"Inclusive Mobile Internet is subject to Fair Usage policy of 750MB. Should you exceed this limit or if such use is detected, notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to ensure the quality and availability of our network to all customers. This may result in, at Orange's discretion, reduced speed of transmission, suspension of mobile internet browsing services and/or suspension of your account."

put it this way im on orange only have 250mb monthly usage (pay as you go) and i use 50-60mb a month (iphone4) but i do use my home wifi (100% worth setting this up) to download apps where possible. I use 3g every day checking emails, twitter, facebook, internet. Id say im an average user.

I went with pay as you go as the normal tariffs are an absolute rip off, the way youve done it should save you £100-£150 over the 18months biggrin

I got 400 mins, unlimited txt and 500mb data for £7.50 / month on an 18 month contract, SIM only. As far as I am concerned that's as far as Orange's interest in the matter goes. What phone I use is none of their business. SIM cutter should arrive tomorrow smile

So I cut the SIM and it all works but I've worked out that I only had a 2G SIM. I managed to convince Orange to send me a new SIM (normal, not micro), here's hoping it's a 3G one.

I cut my normal SIM with a pair of scissors, by eye, and it all works perfectly!

So, the final chapter in this saga:

Orange send me a new SIM. It doesn't arrive.

Orange send me another SIM. Courrier refuses to deliver as he has been instructed to pick up my old SIM and I am not in the office.

Orange send me another SIM. It's still 2G.

I go to the Orange shop and explain my situation. Scary shop manager lady agrees with me and spends an hour barking at people in a call center in India. She gives me a micro SIM and gets them to tranfer my number to it.

I now have a fully working 3G Orange micro SIM. It's only taken a month.

You're telling me!!

At least the Orange shop manager got me £20 credit on my account for my troubles. Still, very very poor from CS.

And yet I had no problem getting a micro-SIM on second asking from Orange - first chap wanted £25!
Second chat to a lovely helpful lass was via retentions selection in the "Press 3 if you want a headache" malarky.
2-3 days later, it arrives, and after a bit of an "argument" with a lady from India, I think, the SIM was made active a few hours later.
