Following on from the failure of the Mk1 gas strut

the new, improved Mk2 seems to work well. I de-pressurised the strut (ie drilled a hole in it) which created a really pretty fountain of gas and pink oil. The vice needed a clean anyway. If you do this, wear safety glasses and a mask, unlike I did. Then get a spring clip and a temporary cable nipple from any decent motor bike shop and assemble as shown in the photo. The clever bit involves working out where to drill the hole so that when the nipple goes in, it sits underneath the piston on the gas strut when fully extended. As you can see I got it wrong which is why I had to cut some of the nipple away. Just ease the spring clip to release and close. If you’re really clever you can chamfer the lower edge of the nipple so that the piston pushes it out on the upstroke. The spring clip pings it back in and hey presto a self locking bonnet strut.
