Ok, I know I'm a sad git for not having come out of hibernation yet... the bible suggests a shot of Redex before starting. Is it referring to a squirt of Redex Petrol Injector Treatment straight in the cylinder or is there some other product ?

A shot of redex petrol treatment into each cylinder, then spin the engine with the plugs out and a rag across the plug 'oles to catch the oil as it is sprayed out again. This lubricates the bores and piston rings before starting.

Then plugs back in, start her up, avoid choking clouds of smoke while redex burns off, and you're off!

...unless your car has an exhaust cat in which case redex will do it no good whatsoever... forgot that bit, I'm a pre-cat mechanic me...
