Hi all, first post in this forum!

I've had this for a few years, and not done incredible mileage on it, in fact it has hardly been ridden the past three years:

One of the handlebar tapes is slightly damaged where my younger brother "borrowed" it and taped a front light onto it rolleyes , but otherwise its in good nick.

I've made a resolution to get myself some more exercise and get a bit more fit again.

It was great where we lived before on the Somerset levels, miles and miles of flat straight smooth tarmac with very little traffic.

Now we've moved into a town, although I am perfectly competent cycling in traffic, I don't much fancy the thought of becoming another SMIDSY statistic (having almost been one in my car early this year) what with having dependants and all. However less than 2 mins cycle away is the canal path, which is 14 1/2 miles long from there.
I could get up on a Saturday or Sunday the same time as I would for work, do 30 miles or so (once I get back into it!) and be back before my wife and daughter get up.

So any ideas what my current bike is possibly worth, and for that money what is recommended I could get? (assuming it is worth more than 50 pence!) I see one recently went on E-bay for £120, is that about right?

The canal path is compacted very fine grit, with the occasional slightly rougher section.
I'd like something that I can still get up a decent turn of speed on the clear smooth sections, (so nothing too heavy and clonky) but that can cope with (and be comfortable on!) something a bit less than a perfect millpond surface.
I'm guessing some kind of hybrid is in order? Do they ever come with the option of drop handlebars?
Ideally, I don't want to have to put any more money with it (unless the Chimera really is not worth much), and therefore will be expecting second hand.
Suggestions welcome!
Chris
