Strange topic this one but chatting to my Father over the weekend he mentioned he already knew which song he wanted played at his funeral. Having mentioned it in the office today it seems he isn't the only one. A few of the more mature staff (over 40s) seem to have a song in mind.

Bit depressing, but what song would you want played at your funeral?

Having thought about it I think I'd go for something fairly modern.

Jet - Shine On.

Please don't cry
You know I'm leaving here tonight
Before I go I want you to know that there will always be a light

And if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away yeah

So many times I'd planned
To be much more than who I am
And if I let you down I will follow you 'round until you understand

That if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away
yeah oh yeah

When the days all feel the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day
I will shine on, for everyone

So please don't cry
Although I leave you here this night
Where ever I may go how far I don't know
I will always be your light

And if the moon had to runaway
And all the stars didn't wanna play
Don't waste the sun on a rainy day
The wind will soon blow it all away
yeah oh yeah

When the days all seem the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day
I will shine on, for everyone
shine on, for everyone
When the stars all look the same
Don't feel the cold or wind or rain
Everything will be okay
We will meet again one day
I will shine on, for everyone
shine on, for everyone

Always wanted Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd.....great atmospheric song, with only a few words all of which are quite relevant:

"And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do; I don't mind.
Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it—you've gotta go sometime."

Positively the way forward!

My mother said,
that I never should,
play with the naughty rude girls in the wood.

I would have an assortment of my favourite songs - I like heavy metal, so that's what would be played.
Stuff like SikTh or Lamb of God are an important part of my life.
Although I might avoid songs like "We Die Alone" by LoG, I wouldn't really care about the 'meaning' of such songs that much either.

Was thinking about this the other day (I'm only 20) while sat there with the OH listening to Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. Being a petrolhead, I want The Chain played at mine, but she said off that album, Songbird would be a better choice, which I kind of agree on, but having THAT bass solo going as the coffin goes into the cremator thing seems like a decent way to go for me.

Mother in Law told her music loving husband to pick something jolly and happy to go with the yellow themed funeral celebration. I suggested 'Here Comes the Sun' by the Beatles, but he went for 'Walking on Sunshine'. Fairly glad, as now I can listen to my choice without thinking about her.

My choice consists of 2 songs, both of which my wife hates- one due to the lyrics and the other because it's miserable. 'Song for Guy' by Elton John (it's my first name) and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' by the Stones, just because it's a cracking song, especially if done with a choral beginning.

"Walk with me in Hell" for added irony...

Funnily enough I asked a few friends this the other day, and one suggested "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC.

I want Metallica - Enter the Sandman to be played at mine. The intro will play with my box on display. As the track breaks into the main part of the song the trap door beneath my coffin is ripped open as fast as possible. The casket then drops vertically, disappears and fireworks along the edge of the stage go off.

Thus begins the piss up.

Into cremotorium with;

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want by The Dream Academy.

During the service.

From The Morning by Nick Drake. (I always think its nearly a prayer anyway.)

And as I go into the flames; Rio - Michael Nesmith.

Kinda of sums up my attiude to life.

"So I think I will travel to Rio,
Using the music for flight.
Theres nothing I know of in Rio,
But its something to do with the night.
Its only a whimiscal notion,
To fly down to Rio tonight.
And I probably won't fly down to Rio,
But,
Then again,
I just might....."

Spelling chip isn't working tonight.
