Plastic trim around the base of gearknob clips out. then i believe its twisted (turn anticlockwise)

My knob is a pinkish purple colour, with a shiny top.....

...which says 'designo'. The colour is actually 'bordeaux' and matches the steering wheel rim sections, door inserts and seats.

The basic gearknob is rather bland; the leather and chrome version is much more elegant.

Incidentally, there's a good 4-page review of the SLK32 AMG in this month's Mercedes Enthusiast.

Thats a posh interior you have there on your 32 nick, mine is just the standard treatment so a better gearknob should jolly it up a bit, its not as flashy as SLacKers though! Thanks for the tip about mercedes enthusiast mag, is it in the one currently on sale or next months? I thumbed thru one on sale but must have missed article, i dont' always get it if theres not much amg stuff in.

It's the December 2010 issue, which I received yesterday. Issue no. 110.

In addition to the used car review of the SLK32 AMG, there's also a short preview of the R172 SLK, a road test of the CLS55 AMG and a track test of the SLS AMG!

Thanks for that Nick I will pickup a copy. I saw a Designo 320 SLK on the Mercedes Club stand at the show yesterday and the seats do look a little different, somehow more chuncky. In the AMG is it quality of leather and colour that makes it a Designo?

The SL is getting better all the time. Its ability to reach licence losing speeds is awesome. Went to the MPH/Classic show yesterday in it, the noise it makes on full chat is like a spitfire with guns blazing.

I am afraid the SLK is sitting in the garage unused at the moment but I will use it in the week for a decent run to Gatwick. It may well be time to sell it on weeping so it gets used but maybe wait till the spring.

One thing I would love to get is a steering wheel with Birds Eye Maple insert on the top and bottom of the rim but have never found one.

Well, it's true.

The designo parts of my car are:

Sports seats in single tone bordeaux red; the leather is of higher quality than the leather was in my SLK320. Bordeaux red is a dark, wine colour. Which is emphatically NOT pink!
Steering wheel top half in bordeaux red.
Shift lever knob in part bordeaux red leather, part black - with a chrome 'designo' cap.
Door panel inserts in bordeaux red. I think that they're 'nappa' leather, but am not sure.
Floor carpets are edged in bordeaux red and have a 'designo' logo.

I'd be intrigued to know how much this 'designo' interior cost the first owner!

Shall check later to see if there's anything else.

Edit: The seats have a discrete 'designo' logo embossed on the integral head rests and the 'designo' logo on the floor mats is also in bordeaux red.

Hi Nick

I got a print out from the dealer about the options on mine as I too have the Bordeaux Designo interior- think it was £1300 extra but will check

as an aside I took the plunge and rather than look at an SLK 55 had the Kleemann pulley upgrade / ECU remap so its now just over 400 BHP

£1300? Good grief - that means that the original owner must have paid over £47K for my SLK32 when it was new in 2003! 2 years later I paid around £23K.....and it had less than 8000 miles on the clock! So that's £3 per mile just in depreciation!
