I'm eager to get me name down on a challenging road cycling event in 2011. (Hoping it'll keep me
motivated over the winter months!)

I was looking to sign up the Etape Caldonia, but as it's in May and my wife is due our first late April, it's probably not going to be the best time to book something up.

Can anybody recommend anything of similar ilk? Anywhere in the UK really.

Cheers

Would of thought any of distance audax rides of 200 300 400 + 600 km would be a challenge.
I have signed up for my first 200 in March and I don't have a bike yet and not ridden in years.
Do them all and you could qualify for the paris brest Paris in August.

Well done , an excellent event smile

I saw Dave M only a month or 2 ago , having not seen him for probably 10 years , spent a few years in the 90's riding in a Reading top, along with Jackson, Druce and co.

A friend did both of these this year and said they were pretty tough:

Lakeland Loop (short, but Hardknott's a bd!) - although it's in April.

Cumberland Challenge - Don't think they've announced the 2011 date yet, but IIRC it's mid-late summer.

Have a look at any of the Action Medical Research 100 milers.

Bath on 3rd April is the first one next year. There is usually a 100km option if you're feeling weak on the day or didn't obey Rule 5.

I did the York 100 this year (my first) and it was excellent.

I'm vaguely debating whether or not to enter this: http://www.le-terrier.co.uk/

A nice ride around the Forest of Bowland - I've done most of the climbs on here but never linked them together; the 102 mile route would be a real challenge I think. This is a report someone wrote about the (shorter) route from last year: http://www.cyclosport.org/article.aspx?id=1049

Pendragon Tour Of Wessex is a well organised multi-day event over the bank holiday at the first weekend of June. Have done it the last couple of years and found it to be a decent challange, but enjoyable. Roughly 108, 116, 104 miles on each day over varying terrain - day 3 is pretty brutal when the route takes you up over Dunkery Beacon after you've already done 2 hard days... The routes aren't designed to be as harsh as a single day sportive but doing three routes back to back makes up for it.

There are loads to choose from on Cyclosport.org but if you want a personal recommendation I'd go with Circuit of the Cotswolds which was well organised, hilly, a decent length (105 miles) and neither too easy nor too tough.

Depending on what SWMBO will let you do, I'd try and get over to France and do La Marmotte or if you really want to push your luck with her, see if you can do Raid Pyrénéen so that you're not tied down to any specific date, although it will probably mean a week away. Plenty of companies do this as part of an organised tour or you can enter directly through Cyclo Club Béarnais.

Have a look at a previous thread on here to give you an idea of what to expect. My Raid Pyrénéen trip (with pics)

You did say challenging, right? wink

That does look good - I might try part of the route this weekend as I'll be in the area.
