XP SP3 - error opening file for writing when installing

Trying to install geekbench and picasa 3.8 on dell d630 running XP SP3.

Get the same error on both - "error opening file for writing: C:\.....\picasa3.exe


WTF is going on?

I am logged in as the only user (adminstrator privileges).

I don't have the XP instal discs (I want to wipe the Dell anyway) and there is no sign of a recovery partition (unless I am being thick).

Any ideas (apart from get a Mac

sounds like a HD issue. Try this

run up a command prompt start/run/cmd.exe in their type
chkdsk c: /f

it will say it needs to run on restart

type exit and restart pc
wait for chkdsk to run 1-30 min
see what errors it says
