Hi all,

I've got a 2004 R230 SL500 that's coming up to a service A in about 1000 miles. Total mileage on the car at the moment is around 52K.

As I'm intending to keep the car for a long while yet, is there any point in getting the gearbox fluid changed? I'm presuming this isn't a normal service item. Any idea what it'd cost? All the work will be done at an independant specialist.

I'd definitely advise it yeah. The 722.6 transmission was originally billed by M-B as "sealed for life" but had a habit of causing headaches especially once the mileage got up to around 100K. A few years ago now a transmission oil & filter change was added to the service schedule of all 722.6 equipped vehicles at 40,000 miles. Once it's been done that one time they're pretty much maintenance free, so yeah it's certainly worthwhile if you intend to keep the car for a while. Price wise we charge about 0.9 hours labour and then there's your parts (circa 4 litres of ATF depending on how thorough the flush is, filter, sump gasket, and dipstick tube cap locking tab), around £120-130 off the top of my head.
