Received my blade sampler pack today.

Very pleased with the shave with the Gillette 7 O'clock. Far superior to the regular blades I was using, with no "pulling" like I used to get under my nose, which I presume shows they are a tad sharper than the blades I was using smile

Shaved again today and a few less cuts than last time biggrin

Thanks for the top on the Gillette 7, I'll try those next.

I had a shave with the Astra SP and my 34c and it was spot on - two tiny nicks on my top lip but that was because I didn't relather after going over it once.

The alum block soon sorted those out though - but it stung like hell!!

Stubble is coming back through now so I think I'll have a second try tomorrow, I'm glad that the original thoughts of face peeling terror were completely unfounded at least!!

Haven't cut myself in a long time of De shaving. The proraso shave cream helps the Edwin jagged glide along with no friction. Best shaving cream. Also the 3 quid Wilkinson sword brush is the business. The blades make little difference. I use mostly 7 o clocks or astras.
Cost is minimal and irritation is low too as a bonus. I never go back to mach 3s my previous go to blade.

Used a DE or Safety razor for first time in about 15 years tonight, Parker R90 Proraso cream and feather blades...very smooth shave and close. A little irritation under the jaw bone , but maybe that's because my beard grain goes in so many different ways.

Glad I found this thread.thumbup

Adonbilivit!

I forgot to pack my Gillette Fusion Power when I came back to uni, so I've had to go and buy a cheapo disposable 3 blade jobby from the local bargain store.
It's just given me a more comfortable shave than the Fusion! Same method, same shaving foam... but where the fusion tangles, jumps and drags on long throat stubble, this 60p jobby just cleanly and comfortably scythed through it!
What sorcery is this?

I noticed you can buy pre-shave oil. Is this a replacement t for sharing foam, or is it something you can put on and apply to soften the skin and hair etc prior to using shaving foam?

For example....

http://www.selfridges.com/en/eshave-fragrance-free...

Or is this something that is used instead of shaving foam?

Many thanks chaps

Most oils are for use prior to soap. Some like it and swear by it. Others don't bother. I think it's better to have the right soap and technique and save adding another step to the morning routine.

Just wait until you try a proper razor wink

Seriously, the black plastic Wilkonson one in Boots is worth a look - cheap as chips and nothing to loose! Well, that is until you get addicted...

Your Gillette probably isn't sharp.

Ok, so I am persuaded that I should try a safety razor, what do I need to buy and from where?

A razor, some blades, a brush and some soap presumably. Any suggestions which products to save me trawling the previous 300 pages?

Happy to buy decent stuff.

There's a wiki though it's a little old, probably still current: click.

Just go to Boots and spend £5. That's all you need to start.

Wilksonson DE reazor, some cheap soap and a cheap brush.

An EJ89 and Personnas is almost a no-brainer for razor & blades I'd say. Then take your pick of the rest smile

As other have said, if you want to see if it is for you then buy this:

http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/wilkinson-sword-cla...

If you are set on it and want to get a decent razor then the Edwin Jagger DE89 is an excellent option:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edwin-Jagger-DE89-Chrome-P...

Lots of sample packs of blades available too:

http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html

If you don't want to try that many, then you can't really go wrong with Personna blades.

The EJ89 seems to have a polished handle, is it slippery in use?
