I want to do a TEFL course, enough to gain the required qualifications to teach abroad. There are many different courses from many different companies, but there is also a lack of what I consider really helpful information. Picking the course isn’t so difficult, I’ve pretty much made up my mind who I will use.

I would like to know your experience with this sort of thing. Obviously these websites have a lot of testimonials but I’m just too cautious to believe them.

So, have you done this or similar, how was the course and how easy was it to obtain work afterwoods?

If you are able to do a search of this forum, you´ll see a thread which outlines exactly what you are asking about.
My wife did a course here in Barcelona and now can easily find more hours than she can cover. It´s not lucrative, but it can pays the bills and is usually working with people who want to learn. Search for the thread as it will answer your questions

Are you looking to do an intensive course, or one where you attend a few lectures and teach a few lessons over the course of say, 6 months?

I did an intensive 5 week course at my old university back in 2009 and had the time of my life. It was a tough 5 weeks, with me having to conduct and plan my own lessons near enough after the first week, teaching a lesson 4 out of 5 days for the next 3 weeks. There was also coursework involved as well as being taught how to teach on top of mentoring a student for a few days.

Before being accepted on to the course, I had to do a number of tasks to prove I at least had the language ability to teach.

My advice would be to speak to a co-ordinator for the course. Ask about the structure, the expected input etc. Beware if they seem overly keen to sign you up without first checking your credentials etc.

One thing to do is properly gen up on grammar beforehand... Know the differences between Gerund´s, and the different types of adverbs etc.... I believe this is also good training for posting on PH!!!

Seriously though many countries learn using grammar as the solid base and my wife spends 50% of the time teaching grammar as it´s the way languages are taught in many countries.
