..and you will need an optical cable if you want to connect to an amp and get surround sound - the sky hdmi only transmits stereo. The boxes may have changed now though!
I have quite an old HD box, and my amp detects Dolby Digital Surround, when in use, from only the HDMI cable.Do you think it might be converting it to pseudo-surround?

On a similarly linked problem, the New Bose V series basically dont work with SKY HD because SKY HD dosent send 5.1 down the HDMI it uses the optical instead. I have been told by Bose that they have been working with SKY and even supplied them with a new V series so they could work out a solution. Bose now tell me that a software upgrade has been released by SKY that now allows them to send 5.1 from the HDMI connector. Since I have been told this I havent been able to check its validity. So can anyone confim? Or is this the usual bks from Bose.

I'd be surprised, to be honest, as if it were merely a software update thing they'd have done it before now.http://www.whathifi.com/news/Sky-considering-addin...
After reading that it does make you think that its more hardware than software related.
