Please excuse the non technical references. At the end of he week,i will be jetting off again for work. On previous trips I've taken a bulky laptop for Internet use in the hotel rooms I stay in. More recently I've also taken the iPad with me, and found I got a lot more use out of that than the laptop.

I overcame the connection issue of using the iPad in hotels not offering wifi by hooking up the laptop physically, and running a wireless "server" on it, and so could connect the iPad that way.

Is there a small lightweight alternative to taking the laptop? Something to plug into a wired Internet connection in a hotel room that would create a wireless access point? As you have to log into some hotel services to get the Internet to activate, would this cause a problem for a standalone access point?

You just need a small router I guess. Apple airport express?

+1 for the Apple Airport Express.

I think it needs to be configured by a laptop though (rather than an iPad or iPhone) so make sure you set up the wireless access before your fly. Then just plug in the network cable and off you go.

Cheers. Have justt reserved one at a local Comet for collection today.

How will it cope with password entry for web access should it be needed? Will that be taken care of by the wireless device, iPad in this instance?

Yup, I have an airport express just for this reason too. Set it up with your laptop at home, add you iPad to it then and make sure it remembers the network.
When you plug it in at hotel, your browser will just open up the login page. (well all hotels have different ways to connect, but it's worked this way for me for the last 6 or so hotels)

Apple airport is a great bit of kit if you travel alot
