I'm a first year university student, currently staying in halls in a flat with four others. We're allowed in halls for the first year, and in year two we expected to get a house.

Two of my flatmates get on better with the lads in the flat next door, so will be getting a house with them. No problem. That leaves three of us, who get on well, and plan to rent a house together in September.

Now, September seems ages off, but a lot of people are getting organised already, so we had our first house viewings today.

None of the houses were quite right (either wrong house, right location or vice versa). The agent gave us a lot of crap about how houses are going quick, and we need to decide soon or we won't have anywhere to live. My two mates, being gullible fools, fell for this rubbish.

Apparently the agent has the perfect house, on the perfect street, but we can't view it until Wednesday. We've arranged to do this, but the other two have decided they want to put a £50 deposit on it each without looking as it sounds ideal, and we don't want to miss out.

I, however, have refused, saying I won't be pushed into anything, and wouldn't dream of putting money on a house we haven't seen. I'm not sure if the money's returnable, but even if it is, I think we'd have to put up one hell of a fight to get it back (the company doesn't have the best reputation).

The other two now aren't speaking to me, saying I'm being 'unfair' and how it shouldn't be my decision confused

To try and ease matters I've been to another agent and arranged two viewings of similar houses on the same road, to try and prove we don't need to go for that one, but this hasn't gone down well.

Am I being a stubborn tt?

Look on the bright side - when it all goes wrong, you can blame them. If you have equal say in the matter, you will have to take responsibility for making the decision. thumbup

Anyway, it's too late so you might as well go with the flow.

I'm thinking no! But I'd rather live with them than a group of strangers. We usually get on very well.

So you need to put £150 deposit down then, (£50 each?). If so, why not just ask the gullibles to put down £75 each, and you will give them £25 each after you've seen it and like it on Weds.

I think you're being very sensible.
Who knows what might happen in 10 months time - the final year students will have moved on, you might have fallen out with your current friends. You might meet new people that you would prefer to share with.
Anything can happen.

Tell your friends to put their money where their mouth is. When the house its being paid on turns out to be a sthole—it almost certainly will be—ask them if they'll guarantee your part of the deposit, from their own pockets.

If they don't agree to that then they're bullstters, and idiots.

No, you're being sensible and not buying something without viewing it.

Let your mates waste their £50.

If you read his blog about his recent exploits with the student marches against tory HQ in London you may reconsider the 'probably' and choose to allocate a 'definitely'. wink
