syncing Ical on mac to android phone

So. I'm looking to replace my old nokia phone (its so old it hasnt got a camera!) with a smartphone, probably something like an htc wildfire or orange san francisco. One of the things i'd really like to be able to do is sync my ical on the macbook with whatever scheduler comes on the phone - can anyone tell me it this is do-able and whether it relies on using some downloaded software on the mac or phone, or both!.

I used missing sync to sync my mac to palm tungsten device for years (after apple stopped supporting palm desktop) but my palm died a year or so ago and it havent replaced it.

I suppose the easy option would be to get an iphone, but as every one and his pikey half brother has one, I don't!

I believe you can sync your iCal with Google Calender, which will then appear on your Android phone over the air without having to do manual syncs.
