Plasmas are better for gaming.

Was it the VT20 he had? If so, I'd just get another one.

VT20 is the daddy - fastest pixel/cell response currently, inc any LCD brand you care to name.
LCD's last act of defiance is brightness in a sun-flooded room, but even that's been marginalised to a fair degree, if the closing of curtains brings the wrath of the missus.

Not really - electronics have a habit of misbehaving, just like cars do.

all panasononic have said was it was " a faulty plasma screen". He reckons the sound was too tinny though so isnt sure whether to replace it

That's a feature of flat televisions, not a lot of space for big speakers you see.

He should be keeping the VT20 as its not only the best 3D television but the best television on the market today full stop and augment it with a good AV amp, a good sub and some speakers.

Subs present a specific channel and the low frequencies from the front effects.

This idea that they need to be massive and loud is a complete nonsense, they shouldn't be intrusive at all, they should just present the part of the sound spectrum which they handle at the same pressure as the other speakers.

If it's a relatively small room, a relatively small sub will do the job.

Big cheap subs are to be avoided as they take too much to start and stop and produce an accuracy that could be easily reproduced by having a friend hit you in the back of the head when an explosion goes off.
