Been having hip pain on one side for a while, made worse by long periods of walking - especially christmas shopping wink - diagnosed by doc / physio as trochanderic bursitis. Symptoms certainly fit. Had an x-ray and doc seems confident no hip joint problem.

Referred for physio; took the private option, 4 sessions, no difference, if anything getting worse. Recently noticed 'snapping hip' when straightening leg.

I've noticed I'm wearing out my shoes differently - eg. on the affected side the outside of the heel is wearing quicker than the other side.

Should I go back to the GP and report this? The physio was talking about referring me to another specialist; I'm claiming expenses back from AXA, but it's adding up and I'd prefer to stay within the NHS if I can. I also don't want to waste time on physio sessions if they're not curing anything.

If I ask the physio to refer me to someone, can that be an NHS specialist or can only GPs do that?

Only the GP can refer via the NHS, although the physio can make recommendations.

I'm surprised it's not improving with physio. How long's it been going on for? And are you doing your exercises??

Since June/July if not before; only started at the physio a month ago - they have me doing stretches a few times a day, plus icing it. Not really making any noticable difference. Four sessions down, so I think it's time to change. They think two more sessions then refer if no improvement?

Obviously I haven't had a look at you but I'd try deep soft tissue massage and some strengthening exercises for you hip rotators. IME it really helps with the stretching.

Do you think the 'snapping hip' thing could be causing it? What actually causes that? Definitely snaps on one side but not the other, lol
