On occasions recently my V50 had been failing to start.

When the glowplug light went out I'd turn to start and the nothing would happen, no starter engagement, no (audible) noises from the engine, and the dash lights switch off. I went to have a look at the battery, and when I tried to pull the battery cover off the electrics fired back into life. I then started the car no problem. The clock had reset, but the trip comp still had all its figures.

It did this to me a few times, and each time I went to have a look at the battery it would fire back up.

When I had a chance to look properly, the negative battery connection was slightly loose. Not hanging off or anything. So I tightened it, and all has been well in the couple of days since.

Would/could the slightly loose connection cause this? Seems a bit strange that the dash would fire up, but then die, only to kick back into life a few seconds later.

or

Could this be the first signs of the battery giving up the ghost?

Possibly an ignition fault. Seems to be a common fault on the S40/V50.

A loose connection would cause that, it could power on the base electrics, but as you add the load of starting the loose connection is overloaded and everything dies!

Something similar to this used to happen on my petrol V50....from time to time it would refuse to start, or in fact do anything. It seemed very random and could happen at any time....e.g. it once was working fine, and then after I'd filled it up on the forecourt it wouldn't do anything.
For some reason the thing that seemed to "reset" it the best was locking it with the keyfob remote and then letting it deadlock itself and then opening it up after another minute or so.

I seem to remember I got some sort of error message, but can't remember what it said now. Hope yours is sorted now

It was a loose battery connection causing the original fault.

It's doing what you describe now. Put the key in, and nothing. It doesn't make the zippy noise as the steering lock disengages and you get "key error try again". It's only intermittent though, and taking the key out and trying again usually sorts it.

It also wouldn't start on xmas day. I got "immobiliser see manual". Usually this is a known fault with the ignition barrel which contains the start control unit. In this case it was a known issue with the original software losing communication with the rest of the car. There was a volvo technical journal on their system for this fault.

There are issues with the steering columns/ignition antenna's degrading (it picks up a transponder signal from the key) and causing intermittant "key error"'s, they become more common until eventually it just doesn't see the key or accept it! (IIRC)
