ice + bike = *******
Discussion
Didn't stop the cycle commute for the very worst of the weather, so seeing as we've had clear clean roads for 3 days and all snow left on Saturday, I stupidly got back enough confidence to start pressing on a bit harder.
30mph+ on a downhill section, hit some ice just as i'd turned slightly.
Trousers, my nearly new Altura jacket, shirt, even my feckin underpants are torn, bike is a write off.
and I hurt.
I was only cycling because I can't afford to drive the car... that has backfired somewhat
So to summarise, much like in the car, if it looks clear, be more careful than if it doesn't!
oh, and recommendations for bikes that can be bought for the price of a pint would be handy

There is a way ..
Back in the day when I used to commute on the trusty cannondale I went quite deep into winter and was always st scared of ice
So I spotted a end of line clearance for Nokian Blizzards £5 each !!
studded snow tyres ..brilliant in the winter ,really grip on the ice ,thoroughly recommended if you want to continue riding through the winter
I think you can still get them but I guess they might be a bit more expensive (mine are still going and they must be 6 years old ...)

Frame is fine, front and rear derailleur toast, gear selectors snapped, one brake lever snapped, something odd going on with the front wheel. Good news is, I've found a bike for the price of a pint It's utter utter st, weighs about the same as my Audi and appears to have been dipped in purest rust but beggars can't be choosers

Davi, get some Duck Tape on your jacket. One layer on the inside, one on the out. Had some on mine as a temporary measure for several years now and not even the washing machine will dislodge it.
... I used a load of park 'tube patches in the same config - works really well, saved the waterproof jacket!Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
