Cycling to work today it struck me, what is the ideal snow setup? Super-soft suspension seemed to do the trick for me, but I'm not completely convinced...

I've been cycling to work in the snow. Love it. Just gotta watch out for the ice!

Much less hassle than driving in with all the other plebs doing 5 mph on clear A-roads.

The 4" tyres on these make it decent bike for snow.

Tioga DH's with 28PSI in the front and 25PSI in the back used to work for me. I was the only who'd be able to get to work on time as well.

Those tyres look the business, but not sure they'd be ideal for snow riding. I've got a 2.5" at the front which wasn't digging in as effectively as my rear 2.25". Putting the damper on it loosest setting let the suspension iron out the bigger lumps of snow, and kept the front wheel pointing in the general direction I was aiming for. It was surprisingly good fun, with no ‘offs,’ but alas, it's all sludge now.

Haven't made any changes to the bike in this weather, though my derailleur froze this morning which is a new one on me!

Bike is covered in this stuff to help avoid the worst of the salt:

And I've made sure everything is well oiled.

So far been much more fun than driving, though one of the trails on my route to work has been used as a sledging run - had to push up that one!! smile

That looks like good stuff. My chains looking rather shabby at the mo... managed to get it jammed in the front derailleur this morning. Need a whole new chainset, but not planning on shelling out until the salts gone. Bring on summer. Although, I was enjoying pedalling effortlessly past our four-wheeled friends on anything resembeling a gradient.

$550 apparently buys you the conversion kit; it certainly works:

700 x 25 at 100-120 odd PSI (pretty much as normal). Cuts a path straight through any snow to the tarmac (ice?) underneath! My deraileur also froze up though having washed all of the filth from the bike on Sunday.
I've been experimenting with different chain lubes to try and prevent it going orange, and the best combination I've come up with so far is a liberal coating of Scotoiler F365 spray over the whole bike (repeat after getting home as necessary when wet) and Wurth High Performance Chain Lube (for Motorbikes) for the chain itself...

Cheers,
Tom

Set of cheap 700x35 Schwalbe Land Cruisers at 60psi, big improvement over the 120psi slicks I used last year. No traction issues yet. Great fun without suspension as well, teaches you a lot about bike control.

Frozen brakes and rear derailleur have been a problem though. As has my fitness, cycling up a hill covered in everything from soft deep snow drifts to compacted ruts and ice is hard work.
