Guys, post Christmas I intend to do some more adventurous mountain biking, with this in mind I fancy a set of knee and elbow pads, does anyone know any good ones or have any they would recommend the less expensive the better.

661 Kyle Strait for the knees. Comfy enough to wear all the time IME, won't go out without them now.

+1 for the kyle straits, wear them all the time and not obtrusive at all.
I have Thor static elbow pads, again, non obtrusive and very comfortable.
Just to add, they add a little warmth which is nice this time of year!

I agree with the above. I wear 661 Kyle Straits, they are surprisingly comfortable. As for elbow pads, I have some 661 D30 ones. They were very expensive though.

661 seem popular but are any of the cheaper brands any good? I've seen some Raceface that look appealing they are about the same price as the 661 ones so should I stick to 661?

What size will you be needing, i have some large ones but i have lost a stone and a half recently so am going to get some medium ones, mine will be going cheap if they fit!

POC is about the nicest stuff out there at the moment IMHO, I even asked Santa for some! Certainly falls into the 'premium' sector though.

These look good for half the price of Kyle Straits and a third of the price of the D30 ones.

I've run an older version of these for 4 years and they've been really good

Mine are wrecked (hence the request for POC ones) but they've never let me down upto and including elbowing a tree 'at speed'.

I suspect being a Lardy sod I will need Extra Large, infact a quick measure says even XL may be a little tight.

I've got some Troy Lee Designs Brian Lopes for knee protection, they offer a simple padded knee sock similar to the Kyle Straits for less adventurous riding but with velcro to attach a shin guard for more extreme stuff. Once fitted you forget they are on, really good design used of course by Mr Lopes himself.

For elbows I use the standard TLD ones. Again they are fit and forget.

Not the cheapest brand certainly but they work.

I used to have Dainese protection until I washed and tumble dried them by accident and afterwards Vern Troyer would have struggled to get in them.

Sorry for not noticing your offer, the Mrs ruled out 2nd hand as she suspects I will actually be using them to prevent injury. I bought some Race Face Dig knee pads as the combination of soft and hard protection sounded more suitable and some cheap fox comp elbow pads, hopefully they will be good enough and if not they are cheap enough to replace without having sunk too much money.
