In my quest to explore some of Abedeen's more "interesting" pubs, I think I may have reached new heights (or possibly plumbed new depths). I'm posting this from a bar stool in the East Neuk! Cheers, Eric

That's better - now in The Red Lion on the Spittal (affectionately better known as "The Beastie"). I hope I can make it all the way home without a piddle otherwise I'll need to stop off in The St Machar or The Bobbin. Cheers, Eric

The Kittybrewster as it's near my flat; a bit spit and sawdust but cosy and free of knuckledraggers. The Queen Vic in Rosemount, but it was a long time ago and it wasn't cheap, nice atmosphere though.

Funnily enough, just as I was about to leave The Beastie, my wife called to ask if I fancied one in The St Machar. We met outside only to find it was shut ... they please themselves with opening times outside University term times. Incidentaly, I believe that the St Machar is under the same ownership as the Adam Lounge / Hawthorne Bar. Indeed, The Grill will always be dear to me but, in this quest, I consider it to be a bit, shall we say, mainstream. I do use The Fittie from time to time but more recently, I've headed for The Neptune. Cheers, Eric

Neptunes a fine pub, just round the corner from my work so it tends to be the pub of choice when someones leaving and we fancy a pint or two on a friday.

Just had a thought. A wee while ago, CT and I had the pleasure of visiting The Fountain Bar ... It was the middle of the day and I guess there would have been about a dozen blokes in there. I swear, more had facial injuries than those that didn't. Cheers, Eric

Yes Eric I remember our afternoon in the Fountain, some of the facial injuries were quite substantial too. The guy who was very enthusiastic, but ultimately disappointed at being turned down, about having a game of pool with me was one of the less wounded. The friend of "Mince and Tatties" I commend your quest, seeking out Aberdeen's more interesting drinking holes. I would of course be willing to join you sometime

I recently had to play a darts match in The Rowantree on King Street. It was always somewhere I promised I'd never set foot inside as it looked so bad.
It was certainly interesting!

didelydoo said: Peep Peeps, if your feeling daring! I haven't been in Peep Peeps for donkey's years. I think it's a bit of a myth that it was ever particularly rough - a myth propogated by that rather contrived " Britain's Toughest Pubs" TV show. I'm lead to believe that it's only open on Fridays and Saturdays just now due to the poor health of the owner (and star of the TV show). I can remember playing darts in there with my wife some twenty five years ago. I had a " bouce out" and my dart actually stuck in the shoulder of a huge docker chap standing at the bar. I was sure I was going to get battered but he nonchalantly plucked it out and handed it back to me with no fuss. Happy days. Cheers, Eric
