I'm using a Live Knoppix CD to do a direct backup of a Windows partition to a USB disk. I have done the same thing before without problems (same machine, same CD, same hard disk, same USB disk).

For some reason, it starts and then after an undetermined amount of time the copying window and both file windows just disappear (so does the backdrop, actually). Not sure what is happening as I'm not a regular linux user - maybe part of the file manager is crashing?

Anyway, any idea what the problem is?

Or, what options I need to give cp to copy everything recursively via the command line?

Had something not dissimilar earlier in the year where the host was putting the USB ports to sleep as it was failing to detect they were in use. Can't remember what BIOS it was controlling it but it was slightly awful.

Hmmm, interesting... It's a Dell, not sure of BIOS. Like I say, exactly the same kit worked perfectly a few months ago...

could be KDE crashing... try pressing CTRL+Alt+F2 (if KDE wasnt crashed this will crash it) and seeing if the whole system is froze... if not, you should be able to copy whatever you need from the command line...
Its not really gonna be worth it for you to figure out whats wrong here, because your only gonna use this once in a blue moon, and there are other solutions out there for you that will better suit you. You might look into BartPE or WinPE because you would be running windows instead of linux, so you will be more comfortable in your environment.

Edit: and good idea for you would be UBC

Thanks for that!

(Couldn't find anything on UBC - what is it?)
