Coming back from a day shopping I hit a pothole about 4 miles from my house. The roads around me are terrible but this one made me stop and assess the situation. The pothole is around 4ft long and about a foot wide. At a guess 5-7" deep. I will stop there in the morning and take pictures with a ruler or something in the pothole.

I have a huge fk-off bulge in my N/S/F tyre. Will check the alloy and other components at work in the morning.

I have heard of people claiming off the council for things like this but not sure if they ever get anywhere with the enquiry. Anyone had any luck or is this a complete waste of time?

But seriously I guess the council is liable for keeping the roads in good condition, so Your claim goes there. Make sure that You have some pictures show the damage, the pothole and the lack of any warning road signs. A witness could be handy as well.

The pothole is at the bottom of a small hill in the road, completly unavoidable unless you want to cause an accident.
Also, was doing around 55-60MPH

Any other gems of advice?

Sadly, all too common these days. By all means make a clain against the council but these days they seem to be able to avoid paying out anything.

Our local council refused to pay up last year - cited some rules that stated they had to take reasonable steps to keep the road in good condition, but given the prevailing weather they had been prevented from repairing it until better weather came. Couldn't be arsed pursuing it further.

Get photos of the hole and the damage as soon as you can. Ask the council what their procedures are, and send it all in along with the bill.
The sooner councils realise the tax motorists pay should be spent on roads, the better.

Got to love the 'advice'.

My wife hit a pothole last year, it was lurking under a puddle. No amount of slowing down a lot would have avoided it, plus as has been said, driving around it would have caused a head on.

ps if the pothole were that big and all the other cars were travelling at the same speed as you (hence you couldn't slow down) there must have been a huge queue of cars with blown tyres
We are cynical. No other cars going my way - don't know if other have hit it. Anything else?

I only really want to do it to prove a point - my road tax and every other stting tax I pay is meant to keep the roads in good condition. They are completely unusable in some parts. I want to cause the council as much aggro as possible.

Sadly they spend all their road budget on compo claims so won't fix the roads.

Either we all claim to make it cheaper to fix the roads or we all stop claiming and they fix the roads.

Surely, if more people made a claim, the councils would realise it would be cheaper to fix the damn roads in the first place, rather than just pay out a few shillings for those who complain the most, which they consider the cheaper budgetary option??

So you knew that there was a big pothole in the road, yet you went at full speed and hit the pothole to avoid a possible accident ?

suspect little and no chance of getting cash back, reads like a user induced error

The only time I've had a puncture due to a pothole was in a RR (an oldish one with proper chunky tyres), true story dat. tongue out
