The inexpensive tripod thread got me thinking on this, so rather than hijack that thread, I thought I'd start a new one.

What would people recommend by way of a lightweight tripod?

I have a Manfrotto XPROB190, which is great, but rather big and heavy to carry around strapped to a camera bag for extended periods of time. I don't want to spend a fortune (no more than £50, but happy to buy second hand) and don't need to worry about a head.

What camera will be on it? I think the 190 is at the small end of the Manfrotto range; I don't think anything smaller would be very good with an SLR. If it's an aluminium one, then a carbon-fibre 190 would be a little bit lighter, but more than £50.

The 190 is rated for up to 5kg. The heaviest I'm going to put on it is about 2kg. 450D at about 500g, Sigma 70-200 at about 1.25kg and maybe the 2x TC at times.

Obviously I don't want to be right on the limit, but there certainly seems to be a reasonable amount of overkill on the 190.

I have the same Manfrotto - this is just what you need (I also have this)... but I bet it goes over £50

If you can stretch your budget, sell your aluminium 190pro and get a carbon-fibre one. That will get you down to 1300g from 1800g ( see here). Going for something smaller will be too flimsy IMO.

Their website says it weighs 3kg; heavier than Kermit's current tripod (1.8kg).

Can't blame me for trying :-)
