Tomorrow morning.

Had a bit of bad news yesterday which means i need to have a re-think on where life is going.

Fancy a few hours to myself in my little metal box and as i'm not "that" far from some good roads i thought i'd go for a drive. I live near Worcester so via the M5 and M50 Wales isn't too far.

Any suggestions for some good tarmac?

Personally I wouldn't use the motorways to get there.

From where you are, I would be heading west to Aberystwyth via the Elan Valley.

Some nice roads through there if you head via the Devils Bridge to the sea. Sit on the front with a bag of chips and contemplate a while and then head back. Views are tremendous, the reservoirs spectacular, so don't forget your camera.

From Worcester I'd either go Leominster > Brecon or Hereford > Abergavenny.
Either way you're then into the Brecon Beacons, if you want a really long drive you could cross it going West and end up somewhere like Carmarthen/Tenby/Pembroke and take in some sea air to clear the mind.

Not exactly sure if this heads in your preffered direction...used to live in Worcester. Try the A433 (i think) Worcester to Tenbury Wells road - great road. Then after Clifton Upon Teme head towards Bromyard and pick up the A44 towards Leominster (A44 was voted near the top of The Times motoring columnists UK roads). Or, just head towards Tenbury Wells and keep going towards the Welsh border. I used these roads quite frequently not so long ago and rarely saw any speed traps - not that i'm advocating speeding of course!

If you do find yourself near Abergavenny make sure you take the A465 towards Merthr Tydfil, then turn off onto the B4560 heading north. Its a fantastic road especially if the weather is nice as the view is amazing.

OK - A44 to Crossgates then A483 to Beulah. Just after the petrol station turn right onto lane towards Abergwesyn. Follow to Tregaron. B4343 then B4574 to Cwmystwyth. Take mountain road to the Claerwen valley round the three reservoirs then A470 south to Llanfair-ym-muallt then b4520 south to Brecon. Now take the A470 then A438 to hereford and head home. smile
