Hi Les,

Bear in mind these are 10+ old cars that have mainly had a pretty hard life. That said it's really important to buy a well cared for car with history and standard or with documented upgrades, even Japanese imports can have the service history don't forget. Biggest issues are body rust on cars that have been in the UK for some time and not undersealed, AYC issues with the pump / diff, engine issues due to poor tuning, drivetrain problems & worn out parts.
They need servicing every 4500 miles that includes an AYC service that is costly, expect 20MPG in general driving and to have to use super unleaded. I've had three EVOs, my favorite was my 4 and unfortunately my 6 was nicked which is not unusual.
Have a look on www.lancerregister.com, there's loads of info on there including owners cars for sale.

Font of all knowledge here:

(You might need to register)

Alweays lusted after an Evo (especially an VIII) but as far as I am aware they have large turning circles, and I have a garage that although h-u-g-e is positioned so badly off a narrow lane it would be a pain . . .

As has been said, look on lancerregister for all the info you need.

Been a Evo owner for many a year. Good servuce history is a must from a Evo specalist (Mitsi Ralliart stamps are no sign of good service!), older models will suffer from rot & rust if they havent been undersealed on import.
At the end of the day you are looking for a well maintained example that hasnt been launched off the lights and ragged half to death. One that has been modded to a decent level by a good specalist would be a big advantage as the "modding bug" is difficult to resist and will save you loads if some have already been carried out. look to buy one off lancerregister and you wont go far wrong.

Be ready for the very high running cost, they are not cheap not matter what you use them for. Fuel economy (only 99 RON) is non existent, Insurance (most are group 20) is high, Road tax (I pay about £445 a year), service intervals every 4,500 about £400 a pop depending where you go and what needs to be done.
Wear & tear all depends on how you drive them, clutches and AYC pumps are big price ticket items although there are places that will re-furb AYC pumps for a fraction of the cost of a replacement.

Is it worth it?........hell yes!

I had an EVO VI for over a year and it was one the greatest things I've had/done. My top tips:

Fuel: expect single figures when driving like an off-duty figter pilot. My average was probaby 20 MPG over the ownership period.

Servicing: 4500 mile intervals is the requirement, not the recommended! The EVO is very reliable for what it is capable of, if maintained correctly.

Insurance: I was 24 at the time and paid 1050 pounds for fully comp with A-Plan. 4 years NCB protected. be prepared to pay high for cover.

Enjoyment. Shallow people often mistake the EVO as a 'chav' mobile, instead of the rally derived road monster it is. I challenge them to find a better drivers car that can deliver cheek to cheek grin in nearly every driving condition.

Grab yourself a copy of this months Japanese Performance, there is a VI buyer guide in it.

My mate normally sees 19 mpg which is all very short journeys (2 miles) or going out on hoons, dont really do any normal driving. He hasn't any real problems with it at all, what a piece of kit.

Had my 6 just over a year, I'd say they are an enthusiasts car they cant be treated like white goods need a bit of tlc to keep them A1

Insurance is around £500 fc (I'm an old git with full ncb)

Tax is £205 per year

Mine averages 22-26mpg usual daily driving, obviously they drink it when spanking them

Servicing as said 4500 miles is an oil change (I change mine every 3000miles) and check, so easy to do yourself , every other service is AYC fluid change and you need specialist equipment so those and the belts etc are probably left to the specialist places

Very easy to work on , loads of parts to mod and fairly well priced

Downsides apart from the cost are gear ratios are a bit of a pain 4000-4500rpm on the motorway is tedious , tank range isnt great 160-200 miles to a tank

Stage one cars ie 350hp or so are a great all round package though

This for me is the worst aspect of ownership. Where previously running costs put the chav element owning these cars, they are now well within the reach of the modifying scene. A quick look at the blue-water vid posted recently confirms this - I've never seen so many hooded tops together.

Nice Car - I can't decide whether to stick some flaps on mine. Do they reduce mud down the side of the car at all?

Ta - black with white lettering and orange insert for me then. Mines a VII RS so the black will suit it better as there is no red on it.
