All my cycling kit is roadie lycra type stuff but for an extended tour I've got coming up later in the year I want to get something that'll allow me to blend in a bit more and look a bit less like a spandex warrior so what do you MTB boys recommend?

I'm after some cargo type shorts and some 3/4s either with detachable padded liner or without plus a pair of padded undershorts and already have a pair of Endura Hummvee which have good outers but the clickfast liner isn't so great so I'd prefer to ditch it and try something like these:

Madison Undershorts

And for the 3/4 length shorts something like these:

Endura Zyme

Anyone used either? Any other recommendations?

If it's a decent length ride and you're looking for quality then I'd say a decent roadie pair of lycras then buy the MTB shorts that don't have an inner.

Also mean you can use bibs if you want to make sure you don't get the uncomfy waist issues some of the inner/baggy combinations have.

I have to be the world's biggest fan of those Endura Zymes.
I have worn a grey pair for about 4,000 miles of cycling with just boxers underneath (short 10 mile each way commutes).
The material has faded slightly around the saddle area but other than that no signs of wear and tear.
IMHO they don't really look like cycling shorts and could easily be worn casually in summer (if you are into that whole 3/4 length short wearing thing...)

For the Dunwich Dynamo (110m) I wore them with padded bib shorts underneath which was awesomely comfy.

They have lots of helpful pockets both with zips and without so can be used with gloves no probs.

Just make sure you go one size smaller than normal (I took mediums for my 35in waist).

I see what you're saying but I'll be cycling through quite a few hot countries and always find lycra a bit warm and those Madison shorts look a bit more aerated to cut down the risk of betty swollocks. hehe

No but some of the countries I'll be passing through expect me to dress conservatively so these will have to do.

Personally I find the zymes a bit too heavy especially when wet , I prefer singletrack shorts ( I think Endura now do a 3/4 version) , great liner too .

On a similar trip I used some DHB shorts with a liner (similar to this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-gravity-baggy-cycli... - I can't find the exact type on the website anymore), which worked fine and were cool enough even in the hottest temperatures.

As for worrying about dressing conservatively, I'd be surprised if you had any issues with just dark non-skintight shorts.

I use the Humvee but I've always found them more comfy with the liner detached and worn separated. Used them for my complete JOGLE trip.
