TomTom keeps shutting down
Discussion
Hi Everyone
Can anyone help me with this?
Its a TomTom Go 720 and the annoying problem that it has got (not to mention unsafe) is that every 5 minutes the screen displays 'shutting down in 9 seconds' and starts counting down until you select cancel and then the display comes back, but the same thing happens again miuites later.
Anyone exprienced this issue? and is there a fix?
Look forward to your replies
Cheers

Is this in the car, when using a power supply?
It could be losing the power supply intermittantly (is it a genuine TomTom one) causing it to ask if you want to shut it down. Has it got the latest software?
Try asking on the TomTom support site - we had an issue with our 520. They were quite slow to respond, and went through all the obvious dumb steps, but got there in the end.

If you are stationary for a period of time (circa 10 minutes AFAIK) it will shut down as its designed to do this, if you are moving then it shouldn't switch off.
Try giving the reset button in the base a prod with a pin/ stylus etc, doing this won't lose any settings but it will force the device to restart from scratch - Mike

Thanks for the replies. Will try the reset thingy and the support forum if needed
I'll let you know how I get on.
Its been playing up for 6 months - well anoying, but the funny thing is on Sunday (after the posting on here) I needed to use the Tomtom for an hours car journey and it behaved superb.

A problem I've had with a couple of Tom Tom's (ONE XL & GO550) is that they use more power than the in car charger will deliver.
So if it is not fully charged it will very slow discharge over a day even when on the charger.
When it gets low on power it will either lock up or restart.
Doesn't happen if it is fully charged from a PC or mains charger!

Nope, it's battery failure. It gets to the point where the 12V supply isn't enough to charge it so it goes into shutdown mode. New battery plus tool to open the unit from ebay for under a tenner and a YouTube vid to guide you through the process of replacing the battery and it's as good as new.
