Hi,

Quick one, does house insurance normally cover bikes locked in a garage? and is a standard garage lock ok?

I'm thinking of upgrading my bike to one worth quite a bit more, so need to know if I need any additional cover.

I will look up my cover, but if anyone has an ideas please let me know

Thanks

when i had my bike nicked from the garage over the summer it did (1k bike) if the bike was worth over £1200 then it had to be declared as an expensive item when taking out the policy. (this was with the home insurance provider of 'the 4th emergency service'

I would check the policy documents and/or give them a call to clarify as all policies are different

nfu mutual is running an ad campaign at the moment extolling the virtues of it's policy re: garage contents. The claim it makes goes something along the lines of 'other insurers think it's unreasonable for you to claim you have £5k worth of contents in your garage - we don't' and shows a photo of a 'typical' garage with ghost-outline images of generic bike/mower/power tools etc. It may be worth a closer look [always read the small print].

p.s. - I neither work for nfu, nor have insurance with them, so it's just something I saw in an ad, rather than a personal recommendation.

Have our insurance with the NFU and all the bikes are listed individually, i believe they want it for bikes valued over 1k

Check you policy wording: most have a limit on individual items which may or may not cover the value of your bikes depending on blingyness. I'm with Marks & Spencer insurance as they cover any item up to £4k without having to individually name the items. They also offer away-from-home cover which I also have: covers them when they're in the van, etc.

Other insurers apart from M&S also offer similar cover too - Tesco "Finest" comes to mind but sure there are others.

I've just posted in the 'is this right' thread, and. Have to say I have received superb service from morethan when my bike was swiped from my shed. It was on the household insurance as an additional item for two weeks before it was pinched, and they paid out with no qualms.

+1

I'm with M&S and their policy is unbelievably simple as you say. Good value too.

It's a real bonus not having to declare anything under £4k.

Another here on M&S

Also insured away from home when behind a locked door, i.e car or shed.

Great customer service too.
