Just bought this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Was half asleep at the time and I was really needing it for my gears not brakes. Obviously the inner cables are different. But is it ok to use these outers for my gears? What's the difference?

No.

The gear outer is bound in a different way. Brake cable is coiled, gears are a sort of straight long coil.

It's to do with dealing with compression of the cable.

Additionally the size of the outer will mean you'll never get the indexing right and crap etc will get in easily.

You need (IIRC) Shimano SP41 outer for gear cable (Ø 4 mm), doesn't matter what type whether Deore or XTR - it's all the same smile

Go see your LBS and give them your heard earned!
