I've recently been having thoughts about setting up a site with my portfolio on it along with selling some services, such as studio shoots or on-location shoots, etc. however I don't have a pro body or any pro lenses. (Current use a 550D)

The way that would work best for me is to see if the idea was successful then put money from any earnings/savings into some better kit, avoiding the expense of getting loads of equipment and it not working out.

So to those with more experience 'in the industry', would it look foolish/unprofessional to work with clients not using professional kit or does it not really matter, based on the fact that most people see any DSLR as 'a big proper camera'?

Apologies if the question sounds at all naive or silly... boxedin

It's not what you've got; it's how you use it. Hope this answers your question?

I agree entirely, I just wasn't if it would be 'acceptable' or not... Thanks.

And when you turn up to a paid gig and your camera wont turn on?

I've no problem selling prints and images/stock etc from 'amature' gear if the images are good enough.

I wouldnt want to spend long working 'jobs' without a backup body and lens appropriate for the work (and flashes etc).

Though to get going it may be worth the risk rather than spending what can be quite a lot of money.

Prehaps rent a 2nd body for important gigs or even buy a cheap older body (say 20D).

Edit:
If I was used to cameras and or photogs and paying a pro price I would be dissapointed to see someone turn up with a low end body and kit lens...

It's not the gear matters.

BUT - do you have any back-up gear? Let's say a client is paying you £500 for photoshoot in a certain day, you get there and drop your DSLR breaking the lens and body. What are you going to do?

Someone that hires out there services will have a back-up.
