Chatting with a mate tonight, he has just moved back to the country from the States (English guy, went out there 6 years ago, wife died last year, coming home as cannot stand to be reminded of her).

Anyway, he is looking into getting Gas Safe Registered here, and is looking to complete the training and assessments PDQ so that he can get earning. He has been quoted anywhere from £5,000 for the basic 8 weeks (he can aready do plumbing as did so in States) to £9,000 for Gas & Plumbing qualifications, all assessments and at the end of 10 weeks, be able to become Gas Safe Registered. This course also provided residential accommodation during the 5 weekdays for 10 weeks course. This course will have him qualified as the following within the 10 weeks: BPEC Gas Foundation Certificate, ACS – CCN1, HTR1, CKR1, CENWAT & CPA1 & Part L Energy Efficiency.

He is aware that he will max out his potential earnings during the first 2 years at about £25k, just wants to be registered and working so as not eating into his potential house deposit.

Google has been pretty poor on giving decent details, and wanted to help him along. Just wanted to hear from anyone that has been through/knows someone whos been through the intensive route, and is now in the trade.

Recommendations as to training companies anywhere from London to Midlands and across to South Wales is good.

A friend did a gas course with no plumbing experience (he was a cnc machinist). The course cost circa £1k and was 1 night a week for 5 or 8 weeks I think.

After this he worked for free with a local firm to get n number of jobs under his belt to become corgu registered.

Then he got a full-time job paying peanuts doing boiler breakdowns.

8 years on he works for himself as a plumber / gas engineer and doesn't like the late nights quoting and the fact his phone never stops ringing.

russ_a, thanks for the response, have passed it on.

What the intensive course offers, I have been told and read on their websites, is something along the lines of 2 days practical learning, and then 3 days actual working under supervision on what basically is unpaid internship with a Gas Safe Regd. engineer, each week of the 8 weeks. This means that the knowledge is built in about 6 weeks, and what would normally be a couple of years of having to complete the jobs for the checklist to become registered, is completed within the 8 weeks as the supervisor is able to pick and choose the jobs needed to be supervised and completed, drastically cutting the time in which to become registered.

As for the late nights, mate is more than happy, as he worked 60+ hours in the States in his previous role as what would basically be an emergency plumber.

I asked on here about this a year or so ago. The response I got from most people was that I would struggle to find a company that would actually employ me after doing an intensive course. The way they would look at it is that you have been rushed through and qualified within the space of 10 weeks when it should in fact take you at least 3 years to learn everything needed. Most companys would much rather take on an apprentice.
