I have watched all four seasons, and then read the first three books, so for me TV and books are pretty much at the same place, (except that the epilogue of the book had a 'twist' that hasn't yet been shown in the show...shame, it would have made a great ending).

I am trying to decide whether to forge ahead with the books, or to wait to see Season Five first.

Those who have read ahead of the show - would you recommend it, or do you wish you hadn't?
I really like the show but find it a bit lacking to other great shows as I know every major twist in advance.

If you can wait I would say wait for the show, particularly as it will go down a few paths not in the books and chop out a number of others. Instead of sitting there thinking "that's not in the books" just enjoy it for what it is.

Aye, we're havin' none of them "books" in here. Just stirs up us simple folk. smile Best to say no more about them...

I watched the first series, read the book, read the second book and was gonna then experiment and see how it compared to watch the second series after the book. But the storey was so good I read them all.
Watching the first series without the book was best, but really, unless you wanna not use the net you are better off reading the books first. Various reasons, but GoT is massive now, and there are a lot of stupid reporters who seem insistent on asking spoiler questions from the books. Social media will be all over most stuff, and the series is now diverging away from the books anyway. There is still plenty good surprises to come I reckon.
Reading the books gives you a greater insight to a tonne of stuff that you probably don't even notice when watching GoT; like the bared sword on Rob's lap when talking to Tyrion, Tywin writing letters, Rob eating salt and bread at the Twins. This stuff might be covered in the extras on the DVDs, I dunno. The books flesh it all out.

Ditto

I found I couldn't put them down! I read on, totally absorbed; to the point of feeling lost when there was nothing more to read.

My feelings on it are mixed. I read the first 4 books before the TV show existed but the 5th book I chose to read.

I miss the feeling of what the fk just happened that I would get if I didnt know what was happening. For example when I read The Red Wedding scenes it was a real blow. On TV it was good but it lost some of the impact.

I got some of the feeling with the Ice King guy this season as he isnt in the books so that was cool. If you can wait I would with hindsight

Im still going to read Winds of Winter as soon as it comes out biggrin

I think reading and then watching is like having your cake and eating it. How it should be.
The cool thing with watching the Red Wedding after the books is that you got the utter shock of the book...and it was a shock. Felt low after that chapter...but then in the visual medium you know what was coming and it meant the tension slowly built, so it was great for a different reason. One should watch everything that happens onscreen with a hawkeye anyway, but in that sequence I was glued to the screen, and when the Reins of Castamere played, it was electric. The stomach slowly turned until that irreversible betrayal happened.

Really? I love him. He has the right kind of voice and resonance for a pious prick.

I have just re-watched season one, and the thing that struck me was the generous and goodly amount of shagging and boobies depicted. Somehow this has been lost from subsequent seasons; was this a deliberate move?

50/50.
The producers spunked all their budget before the series finished and had to do a lot of talky scenes. A good way to film exposition scenes is with boobies! biggrin

I thought the bloke out of Homeland-Saul? Was pinned to be Doran Martell?

No matter I think Dr Bashir is very good-liked his character in Kingdom of Heaven.

I'd say he does seem to be much or any older than Pedro Pacals Oberyn? Okay just checked an he's almost 10 years older.

Not as bad as the latest/last Mountain, meant to be the Hounds older brother and all.

If I look like that when I'd 48 I'm sure my wife will be happy....... :-)

Take the grey beard away and I don't think he looks much if any older than Pedro.

Has this been posted yet, the Geeky in-jokes on GoT, books and TV?

I knew of the Monty Python "I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!" one.
