B5 / B6 S4 V8 Running Costs
Discussion
Edit - Apologies, I meant the B6 or B7 S4.
Hi Guys
I have for a very long time wanted an RS6, and was all set to chop in my 123d for one.
However I got the fear due to the very large running costs just for service items like cambelt, brakes and tyres, and then there is the danger of the suspension and gearboxes going.
So, as a compromise, I am thinking of a B5 or B6 S4 Avant. I have driven one before and really liked it.
Are there any potentially astronomical costs like the RS6, or is everything kind of sensible money?
Many thanks

I think there are a number of other threads on this theme but, in short, from my experience not really.
The B6 (and B7) I believe do tend to consider auxilliary rads as consummables. I've replaced 3 in 7 years. I've not encountered any other unexpectedly exhorbitant costs but then I've only covered a lowly 35K miles in that time.
Others with higher mileages might have experienced some more costly issues. You need to budget £300-£400 per year for servcing and probably £300 a year for tyres though for upto say 10k miles per year. And then of course there's the fuel - they like their 97RON

Had an S4 b6 for two years and got around 13-16mpg round town and motorway 23mpg max. That is a manual but autos will get more on the motorway due to the different ratios. Other running costs apart from petrol are cheap - tyres are nothing special size wise and engine is solid with major service coming in at 4-500 and minor oil change every year - around 150..
Great cars - as its constant 4x4 it hits the mpg but great to drive and a real performance bargain... If your doing big mileage and money is tight prob not the best idea but otherwise go for it.
Ive gone from an S4 to a VXR8 to a C55 and both are slightly better on fuel! I used to commute to london in mine and average was 13mpg.

just got rid of our B6 avant manual after 6 months ownership, not that impressive imo.
ride is very fidgety and hard, mpg was poor and they dont feel very quick for 340hp, was a VGC low mileage example, tracking all done.
+ point, we sold it for £1500 more than we paid for it, which covered the cost of the dual mass flywheel failure (which is fairly common apparently)

They're tough and as mentioned above a well covered subject on here so sit down with a cup of tea and have yourself a good read.
Auxilliary radiators will fail at some point, coil packs can go but are cheap, timing chain wear is rare but expensive, oil consumption is high but normal.
I've just had my 2004 B6 serviced, and they changed all eight coil packs under warranty allthough I've never had any trouble with them.Auxilliary radiators will fail at some point, coil packs can go but are cheap, timing chain wear is rare but expensive, oil consumption is high but normal.

There's 2 sheets - one with all the costs, one with a graph (including fuel price - yikes!).
