Hi

Just bought one of the above today. I am a beginner at the home cinema thing and was intending to run the cables tomorrow which was to to be 6 speakers as per my DVD upscaler. I see in the manual a total of 13 speakers for the 7.1 sound. My question is if I run the speaker cables for them all and just use the 6 until I can afford the extras will it work ok or should I wait to get the total system. Also my room is pretty much square with the TV in one corner and seating in the other, as its a through lounge with one of the walls needed missing, whats the best positions for the speakers.( that last bit was probably as clear as mud wasn't it )

Thanks

If you see 13 speakers in the manual that must be showing different configurations on the same diagram.

7.1 means 7 speaker channels plus 1 subwoofer. If you wanted to use all of them, that would be 3 across the front (L, ctr, R), 2 side surrounds and 2 at the back. In reality if your room layout is a bit of a compromise, then getting all of those in the right places is going to be a struggle and you might not get any benefit over using 5.1 (and most films will only make full use of 5.1 anyway), which is the same 3 across the front with 2 surrounds.

Up to you whether you buy all at once or in stages as you can afford it. Buying in stages will probably end up with you have better kit, but it can also send you down the dangerous path towards 'upgrade-itis'...

We have the same box - and ran it with just four speakers (no centre!!) for a month before adding more. It can set up to detect most configurations, though obviously cannot compensate for silly arrangements.

As above poster - you should only need a max of 7+1 speakers, and for the majority of sources can get away with 5+1. We do without the subwoofer at the moment and still enjoy our films.

I'm considering one of these 608's having heard good things about them, how do they compare with similar recievers within the $300-$350 bracket? Have just got a Sony LX903 3D TV and will prob get the Q Acoustics 2000 speaker package also. cheers

Well, we're very happy with ours. It sounds good and drives the TV well, the remote makes sense most of the time and controls the things we need.

Well, I bought the 608 at the bargain 299pounds, have hooked it up to Q Acoustics 2000 speaker pack and Monitor Audio R45HD rears, am very happy so far BUT for some strange reason the Audio settings on the Onkyo (accesable via middle button on remote control) keep changing every time i switch it on.

The most annoying thing (making me suspect its not human error) is the fact its ONLY the "Subwoofer Level" NOT the other "Bass" or "Treble" levels that are changing. The Sub level keeps revertings back to (minus)-7dB for some strange. As im a bit of a Bass head this is quite annoying as keep have to going in to adjust the levels each time I switch it on. As I say, the other levels I set are fine and stay as they should, just not the Sub level.

Any ideas?? confused
