Robocop (2014 remake)

I thought it was st to be perfectly honest. And not just because I LOVED the original as a kid, but just because this one left me with no connection to Murphy, i couldn't like the guy for some reason. His suit looked crap, the original Robocop looked bad ass and not to be messed with, this new one looked like he just had shiny riot gear on.
He looked stupid all black and tactical. And the lack of an actual decent Bad Guy.

His gun was too small and not bad ass enough ('87 Murphy's was a big ass desert eagle type shooter that looked fitting for a bad ass robot to use)
I could go on, but I've already had enough of listing my flaws with it.
I agree.

The whole thing was massively watered down and insipid. A diet cola compared to the original Coke. Also, it's clear that the writer(s) and director simply didn't *get* the original film. Although many people dismiss the original as just an action film, it can actually be watched on many levels. One is action, another is rather biting satire, but also there is an often-missed level that is an exploration of what it is to be human (think Ghost in the Shell), on man losing his humanity to machine, but regaining it. The whole idea that Murphy's brain is just a wetware CPU to be integrated into an automaton, yet his humanity re-emerges and he becomes human again.

The 2014 Robocop had elements of that but it wasn't really explored other than a rather vague and unsatisfactory "we've made him think he is in control but actually he isn't... oh, wait... he's regained control!"

So, yes, I agree; massively disappointing. Even worse was that I paid to rent it.

By contrast, I thought the remake of Total Recall was rather good. Mostly because it seemed closer to the kind of thing P.K. Dick would have written (although I confess I haven't read 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale', but I have read quite a lot of his work including 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep')

Another movie I caught coming back from the States was Transcendence. There wasn't a lot of choices on the movies but I thought I'd give it a go. I'm not a bit fan of Johnny Depp (more his movie choices than his acting) but this film was awful. They even managed to bag Morgan Freeman as a cast member somehow.
Agreed, a waste of time.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters".

No, I'm not dissing the film itself - I've not watched all of it. Bought the BD which arrived today, sat down to watch it, and it causes my AV amp to shut down every so often. Not randomly either, but at specific points. I haven't got more than 20 mins into it and have had multiple shutdowns.

Seriously annoyed right now, but switched it off for now. Tomorrow I will try to configure AV Amp, BD player and Telly to disregard HDMI shutdown commands. If I can. But I shouldn't have to.

Grrrrrrrrrr

Edit: I have never had a BD do this to me before and this is a mature setup.

Really. Don't. Bother.

It is not worth wasting any more time on. It is not as bad as Die Hard 5, but that is hardly praising it...

Never thought I would say this but Pacific Rim was better.
The adverts had two things in them Bryan Cranston and Godzilla, neither of which were actually in the film much.
The plot made no sense, the monsters kept changing sizes, the acting and script were mostly rubbish. The effect were ok but it did still look like a man in a suit (this may have been deliberate).
Why would prehistoric monsters develop emp capability?
Just a mess.

I was a massive Robocop fan and still haven't got around to watching the remake, don't think I'll bother.

BTW, they did originally intend for his gun to be based on a Desert Eagle but it was deemed too small (!) so instead modified a Beretta 93R.

I may get a roasting for this, but I've just watched Ender's Game and I didn't really think than much of it. I felt it rather plodded along somewhat, there was no real tension or suspense (the ending was fairly well telegraphed right from the beginning - it was clear humankind was the aggressor. The only surprise was that we didn't somehow start the war) and overall I found it rather 'meh'.

I did find out what was shutting down my AV amp though - too much volume. Seems I was hitting some kind of failsafe that was protecting the amp and/or speakers. Knocking it back a little stopped the shutoff issue.

Completely disagree. If you were expecting Destroy All Monsters then yes you'll be disappointed, but it's far more in keeping with the original Godzilla where he was more an unstoppable force of nature and all humans could do was watch, like an ant colony watching two lions fight. If you can accept a creature could grow to that size (can't say I noticed it change but will be waiting for the Blu Ray to confirm) and have atomic breath I'm not sure that an EMP is that much of a stretch
